no i dont mean share a printer thats hooked to one computer via parrell or usb. I talken i bought a printer that has a network card in it and want to know how exactly you install it. Do You install it like a normal printer.....im kinda clueless hehe....and i realy dont know what network card it has it in cuz it came with it.

forgot to say im runing all win98se and if you want to know what printer its a Calcomp Drawingmasters 800 plotter

Would I be correct in assuming you also received a driver disk with the beast?

If so, and there is no obvious setup program then you may need to manually install the drivers from .inf files. I would assume that you first need to install a port, so add new hardware and then go through the bits until you can manually add the hardware, pick ports and then do the 'Have Disk' thing and point to some spots on the disk that have the .inf files.

Many network printer setup programs will allow you to specify the IP addy of the printer or will discover the printer itself. Hopefully you know what the IP address is if it doesn't come with a default address (look in the manual)

I would just hook the printer using CAT-5 into the same hub that your computer is running off of.

You can configure most printers via the on-screen panel (if you have buttons), telnet, or the web. Consult your manual and use the driver / software disk they gave you if you can't do it manually.

Maybe I didn't catch everything in your posts, but, do you have a network?

Before we can discuss installing an ethernet printer, we need to know if it has a network to work with. Since you are using Se, I will assume you don't have a router/switch, and will also assume you will be dissapointed with the plotters performance once it is connected.

Well, I looked tried to look at your <a href="http://www.gtcocalcomp.com/index.html">plotter specs</a>. Looks pretty serious. You might want to talk to them.

Get a cheap USB to ethernet print server or a parallel to ethernet printer server for your run-of-the-mill desktop printer ($40-70). Or, you can shell out the cash for a pricey network laser printer that has ethernet built in ($350+).

There are a bunch of options for switch/print servers out there that allow for multiple printers on one hub. Look to linksys for those options($65).

i have 2 8 port switches. so to answer ur questions yes i do have a network. Thru win 98se it dont work well? cuz i could install win 2000 pro if that would help. If it will make my printer not work well i will just use parallel but i would liked to be able to print off all computers with out having my Cad computer on.

well i finaly actualy got the plotter today...pluged it into my switch and non of my comps could find it. The NIC on its lights were green and the lights on switch was on to. I used the menu to select the port but i could not find a ip adress place. It came with no manual or install disk. Ive spent about 2 hours looken for drivers/manuals but no luck.

Are you able to look at your network configuration to see the addresses for your stuff? Can you do dhcp and set a range? You might try a different OS also.

I repeat my original suggestion: try contacting a current reseller of the product and see if they can provide you with a manual or additional information.
