Keystroke Recorder

Has anyone ever installed a keystroke recorder / monitor on their or someone elses computer? Do they work?

I am having some problems with an employee in the company. I know they are screwing around when I am not around, but they are smart enough to clean out all internet and e-mail activity that is not work related.

Does anyone have any personal experience with the recorders? I would be interested in trying one.

most spyware busters will find keyloggers...

here's a hardware solution.. it doesn't take much effort to install, and most people don't see the area behind their computer...

Isn't there legal concerns with using these?

I'm not advocating or recommending its use. I'm just saying, check the legalities before-hand, including your "Acceptable Use" policy.

You do have an "Acceptable Use" policy, don't you?

We have a "technology policy" that specifically outlines what can and cannot be done with work computers. Employees sign it when they come to work for us.

Also, per the supreme court, you basically have no rights when it comes to work computers. E-mail and other info that you transmit is fair game for review as far as I know.

As long as they've signed something, then I think you're fine.

I'm not arguing with you, just suggesting you check.

Didn't mean to come across all snotty!

No offense taken. I didn't think you were being snotty. I, too, have been curious abuot the legalities of situations like this but I have always heard that the employee basically has no rights over what is typed on a work computer. Whether they signed something or not. Haven't there been a bunch of cases that have gone to court about people who's companies looked at their e-mails? To my knowledge, it was fair game.

<a href="http://www.laborresearch.org/story2.php/98">This article</a> [<a href="http://www.laborresearch.org/">LaborResearch.org</a>] might clarify things a bit for everybody.

It's very hard to find an employer guilty of privacy violation when the situation involves "corporate assets" (the computers, the Internet connection, the paid employee time). According to the article, email is still up in the air, since the courts have not definitively established email as a form of either oral or verbal communications.

Good luck, and please let us know how it pans out. Also, if your suspicions of this guy are so strong as to warrant keystroke loggers and the like, maybe s/he is worth dropping...

I dont think this person is guilty of anything more than screwing off and possibly sending some inappropriate e-mails. She is not directly underneath me, so I am not really the person to fire her. She works for one of the managers who work for me.

Anyways, I basically want to confirm my feelings about her. Once I know she is screwing around all day, I can push the manager to let her go. It is a long story (he has been on military leave and hasn't seen recent events) but I think he still thinks she is doing a good job.

i have had some expirence with them, bad ones sort of. My younger brother once got be heavily into online text based gaming, and he is really really good at the game that we were playing, so i decied the best way to succeed would be to steal his password and steal some of his stuff. So i installed a keylogger, got all this info, did everything and it was all good. Then, it turned out that it was only a demo version of the program and after 30 it starts popping up with messages that say "keylogger needs to be paid for blah blah blah" so he got me and got really really mad. So i took it off, installed a better one, but left it off becuase i stopped caring about that game.

If anyone knows of a good free one i can download without anything stupid like that i would love it
