how to set up multiple monitors

I have an old monitor and and old video card that I upgraded from a while back. Id like to run dual monitors.

I know from friends that running dual monitors in win XP is relatively easy. But I want to do it in win98se. surely this can be done, but how?

Pop in the old vid card and hope for the best.

Some old PCI cards don't play well with newer cards and sometimes you have to play with the PCI/AGP init display setting in the BIOS.

Once it's good to go (both are listed without yellow ! in the device mangler), go into display props, select the greyed out monitor and select 'Extend my Windows desktop ... '. Make sure you have both monitors on first, of course, as your PCI may take over as monitor 1. Hit ID display (settings tab as well) to show which is which.

You have to bee very careful when doing this. As stated in the previous post, some cards just don't work well together.

The best way to do this is to get a card with multiple outputs. Matrox has been the standard for this for quite some time, but they aren't made for gaming.

If you want to use an old card, make sure it is PCI and your primary one is AGP. Many people have gone through a lot of problems with driver conflicts. Try checking out the following site to see if your two cards work well together.

Here is an article by The Screensavers that you might want to check out.

Good luck.

ok, well first try was a dud.

here is my config:

AOpen AK72 mobo
Win98se
monitor Logisys LGX710
Radeon 7500 vidcard (PCI)

what I tried to add was my OLD video card:
S3 Virge GX/DX (375/385) (PCI)
and a really old Dell monitor (model no VC-2, from 1991 - still works though)

the problem I had was this: first, before even adding these older components, system manager shows two monitors, even though I had only one connected. It shows a "default monitor" and the Logisys. I have tried to delete the default, but after the required reboot, it just comes back. Right clicking the desktop and selecting the settings tab also shows the same thing (ie. "default monitor on Radeon 7500" AND "Logisys LGX710 on Radeon 7500"). Now, even though the Logisys identifies as the #1 monitor, when I installed the other vidcard and monitor, windoze defaulted to the old dell on the S3 card as the #1/primary.

but of course, that is NOT what I want. I want the Logisys as the default (and therefore #1/primary) monitor and the old Dell on the old vidcard as the #2/secondary.

How can this be accomplished?

My ATI Radeon 9500 Pro does an excellent job of running two monitors, one 19 inch and one 17 inch. Once you go dual, you'll never go back to a single monitor.
