is this a decent price?
This is from cyberpowerpc.com and falls right into the dollar range I am looking at. I plan on using an existing HDD and power supply in addition to the components listed above. I also have an old SBL Platinum I can add in if the onboard audio doesn't do it for me. I'll be using this for gaming, mostly. Hell, who am I kidding, it'll be used for almost exclusively for gaming. I know I might be able to find the individual components cheaper if I shop around some, but I just wanted to get an idea from the learned folks here at TFP on this rig's seaworthiness for the price. Thanks in advance. |

Meh.
From newegg: 7900 GT's are around $200 each CPU is so outdated they don't sell it on newegg anymore, Martel estimates $150 Motherboard is probably going to be about $100 2gigs of ram is about $250 plus case, drive, etc... yeah, it's around the right price. However, you could do a LOT better for that price. Case in point: Hooray for core2 processors, unless you're a total AMD freak. Also, having SLI (dual) video cards is a bit of a pain unless you know what you're doing as far as set up- you have to tell each game you play how to deal with SLI video, and some games don't support the format. Also, if you're going to be running ram and video cards and processor, you want to have a ROCK SOLID power supply. Martel (the expert) says that he'd be suprised if a 350watt power supply would be sufficient, especialy if it's a generic brand. And no optical drive? How you going to be installing those games? (Pirate! ) PM for a more detailed explanation of my opnion, if you'd like

350 watts is to low, it may run, but don’t add anything else to the system. Get at least a 500 watt. Contrary to Sage, SLI is easy to use, but it does have limitations. I have never had to configure it to a game, and have had no trouble with any game so far (oblivion, anything on steam, battle field 2...). However, you can not run multiple monitors with SLI enabled, switching from SLI to non SLI is easy, the only trouble i have is when i am transcoding with virtual dub mod, I can’t change SLI modes.
3800+ is fine; but you could do better, looks like they are not selling so they are trying to get rid of them. $1000 sounds fair, however, an 80 gig drive is lame, and you can get a 250 gig for a few bucks more.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I'd be using a DVD-ROM I already have. Same with the HDD - I have one in my current PC that more than up to the task. And don't worry, the PS I have now is 500w - plenty of juice there.
After speaking with a friend, it looks like I'll be changing to Intel. I'll post revisions when I can. Thanks for the input thus far, though. Last edited by Coppertop; 11-08-2006 at 09:37 AM.. Reason: i -> I |
