I have a gut feeling the Lakers picked Andrew Bynum for somebody else, with a trade coming later tonight. We'll see. I don't mind the pick, though I would have liked to have seen Felton fall.
I agree with Nimbletoe, WTF is Toronto doing?

I loved how Vitale and Stephen A. Smith both went on rants about the two international players that got picked over Sean May and Rashad McCants #11 and 12, followed by those two getting picked #13 and 14.
(P.S.-Is it just me or does Stephen A. Smith look and sound more like Undercover Brother every day?)

Toronto makes no sense, in a year’s time they:
-Draft Araujo last year way too high -Trade away Vince Carter for nothing -Buyout Mourning’s contract when NJ wasn't willing to do so (because the Nets rightfully understand players shouldn't get paid if they don't want to play). Oh yeah, Mourning was dealt in the trade for Carter -Draft Villanueva way too high (already have Bosh at the 4-spot). Just horrible deals made by a struggling team, they've been spitting on their own grave. I agree dylanmarsh, I think Paul is outstanding, would have been a great pick for Atlanta. djtestudo, I pay no attention to Smith, Anthony, Bilas, or Vitale. Teams that have experienced scouts, coaches, general managers, etc can't predict the draft; otherwise players like Redd, Arenas, Ginobili and many others wouldn't have made it past thirty other players. Some players flourish, some bust, its just that simple. It irks me to no end when these analysts speak with absolute conviction on what they think teams should have done. For example, I was thinking about this while watching draft tonight and fortunately saw Bill Simmons refer to it in an article on espn.com. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2...simmons/050628 [PHP]The Hawks take high schooler Josh Smith as Jay Bilas rips the pick to shreds. "If you had to pick which guy was most likely to be a bust in the first round, it would be this guy," he said. "He has no right hand, and he can't shoot."...PHP] Josh Smith turned out to be a great rookie, averaging nearly 10 points and 2 blocks per game, while bringing down about 6 rebounds per as well. He earned All NBA Rookie Second Team honors. He achieved this coming out of high school. Bilas was an average player for Duke who got drafted in the 5th round of the NBA and never played. He doesn't know shit about the NBA game, but ESPN gives the Bilas top 20 rated players list as if fans really give a shit what he thinks. I don't blame Bilas for guessing wrong on Josh Smith, as I mentioned, the draft is difficult to project. However, his arrogance and guts to call Smith a bust is the height of hypocrisy. What the hell was everyone's fascination with Marvin Williams? The guy wasn't the best forward on his team, he played off the bench (theoretically against the other team's bench), and only half the game.
To think that this guy has enough experience and skills and stamina to play an 82 game NBA season full time is crazy. I'm sorry but "upside" doesn't win you ball games. The most telling thing was in his workout with the Bucks Marvin had to stop and stretch whereas Bogut completed his workout without a rest. The Bucks made the right choice, interesting how Bogut pans out, he played rather well in the olympics I thought.

I'm a bit T.O'd with T.O.'s pick Villanueva. Basically its a slap in the face to Bosh, who I think will catch the first train outta here when his contract comes up. Babcock has once again proved his incompetence as a GM. What an idiot. The Raptors are an unstable franchise at the best of times, and screwing up the draft every year isn't going to help them much. Dagnammit!

I'm with most of the critics in wondering what the hell the Lakers were thinking when they picked up Bynum over a proven player like May who would have been an instant starter. Bynum a work in progress and they STILL don't have a solid C.......Grant/Divac/H.S. Bynum......ugh.

Bynum has a lot of upside, whereas just about everyone said that May has reached his max as far as potential. Plus May is 6'9" 260 (not a solid NBA 260 either), Bynum is 7'0" 300lbs.

May reminds me alot like Brand and he isn't having to many problems in the NBA with his size.
From what I've seen of Phil he doesn't like playing rookies and it usually takes 3 years before HS's to become key players for their team. (exception of a handfull) Just in time for Phil's contract to be up. The Lakers were also quoted as to be building a "fast" paced team around Kobe since they signed him to a gizillion dollars telling him it was now HIS team and noone else's. Don't see where getting a Shaq wanna be gets them there.

The problem with upside is that it isn't here yet. When you are bringing back the great coach who hates and is hated by your superstar player, you shouldn't be going for upside.

The Lakers drafting of Bynum was calculated move by Mitch Kupchak. Mitch wanted to show that Phil is not running the team, and, at the same time, went with a really...I mean really ballsy pick. Everyone is bad mouthing the pick, and they have a good point. Mitch is going to take a lot of shit for this for 2-3 years and hopefully Bynum becomes a player after that. The key is that you are going to have to play this guy a little, but not too little....and not too much. It is a really fine line. I don't hate the pick, it's OK. It's going to make me a nervous wreck though.

I think the Lakers realized they were not going to be competitive anytime soon no matter who they picked in the draft.
So they decided to build for the future. May wasn't going to ever help the Lakers win a championship. Bynum just may do that a few years down the road. |
