There's two different issues here.

One is that using the actual compound MDMA (ecstacy) is completely harmless. Nobody's going to agree with me here on this, but that doesn't change it. Hardly any of the studies done on ecstacy were scientifically valid, and often analyzed people who had been doing many drugs in a combination for decades. Of course they had holes in their brain.

The second issue is that the problem with acquiring illegal drugs in the United States and in general is very dangerous and there is no guarantee that what you bought is in fact what it was represented as in the purchase. This is the main reason people die from heroin, because it's impure and there's no easy way to tell how concentrated the item you purchased was.

I realize this is very controversial because it sounds like I am saying drug use is safe. It's not, and that's not what I'm saying. I am advocating accurate information rather than retarded anti-drug and pro-drug rhetoric and propoganda.

Disclaimer: I've never used anything, at all. But if you are advocating Science and Reason then you should bother to get your facts straight, from the original research done on MDMA before it became a political issue.

That being said having sex on ecstacy is about as intelligent as picking stocks while riding the white pony. It's possible I imagine, but it's generally a terrible idea as you're incapacitated in that one lone, critical regard.

Funny that graph there? MDMA(Ecstacy) is LESS DANGEROUS than alcohol and tobacco.

Your turn now. I'd like to see some of these sources that you guys defending the '60 minutes' version of the story have to prove how 'omfg dangerous' it really is.

Nobody had holes in their brain. A PET scan was taken with the threshold for displaying blood flow set higher than in a control image taken of another person, and areas of lower blood flow appeared darker because of the difference in the threshold setting. There is absolutely no valid scientific evidence that suggests that MDMA causes "holes in the brain," just like claims of reefer madness and crack babies were invalidated by further research.

I don't think theres any doubt that MDMA causes damage in significant dosage (all drugs do), the question is whether the average human that uses it hits that level, and whether the damage is repairable. Some of them definitely do, but people using it sparingly (no more than a few times a year) in small doses? I would be surprised to find any cognitive defects in them. The science is far from certain on both of those questions. And it does indeed tend to be biased because governments usually fund the studies, guess what kind of result they're looking for? I loved Ricaurte's study that involved injecting gorillas with massive amounts of "MDMA" and watching half of them drop dead, and then it turned out the stuff wasn't even MDMA but methamphetamine which is considered much more hazardous to the brain by pretty much everyone. If ravers were dropping dead at that rate there would be none of them left.

In any case, dropping dead from taking it is highly, highly unlikely. Most people who die have some other complicating factor. No healthy people are ODing on this stuff and ending up in the morgue like with heroin and many pharms. It's been popular for 20 years (which amusingly corresponds precisely to the time period since it was banned; I'm sure drug dealers are thankful for the free publicity from the government) and probably in the range of billions of doses have been consumed (by, like, the entire youth population of some countries), so that puts the risk in perspective.
