It's down in New Zealand.

Let's leave the U2 behind for a bit. How about one for the folks in the T-Dot...

Back in the summer of 2003 several big name acts got together to perform a benefit concert to promote tourism in Toronto. This was right after the big SARS scare, so the concert was aptly titled Sarstock. The show included quite the list of performers, including AC/DC, The Guess Who, Rush and the Rolling Stones. One performer, however, was famously bood off the stage after being pelted with water bottles.

Who was it?

Fly 01-13-2006 05:38 AM

gotta be that justin timberlake dude.......

Martian 01-13-2006 05:48 AM

That it was.

I don't really get what the guy expected. I remember when the line-up was announced and it was AC/DC, Rush, The Stones, The Guess Who, Blue Rodeo, The Flaming Lips and... Justin Timberlake?

One of these things is not like the other...

Anyway, you're up flyman.

Fly 01-13-2006 06:09 AM

i got nothin' at the moment man.........

i'll let you toss a Q out there.

and thanks for helping keep this thread goin'.

Martian 01-13-2006 06:19 AM

No problem my wacky tabaccy toking friend. I got so much music trivia in this old skull of mine, I could do one of these just to myself.

Next question :

The Eagles had a modest hit with the song Ol' 55. However, Don Henley did not write this tune. In fact, he once said of the original singer 'he hated our cover, that is until the royalty cheque came.'

Who did it first?

roachboy 01-13-2006 06:32 AM

tom waits

no time right now---maybe i'll think of a q and post later. in the mean time, carry on...

Again? Christ; I know I said I could do a thread to myself, but this wasn't really the intent...

Alright, 'nother one then. And I'm gonna make this one harder, since the last two were gimmes.

Keeping with Don Henley for now...

Before Don Henley played in the Eagles, he had a smaller Texas band called Shiloh. This band was backed financially by another famous Texan. Name that man.

Leto 01-13-2006 07:06 AM

ross perot?

Martian 01-13-2006 07:29 AM

Good guess.

It's wrong, but still a good guess.

God of Thunder 01-13-2006 07:49 AM

Stevie Ray Vaughn??

Martian 01-13-2006 08:28 AM

Also wrong. Maybe this one is a bit too challenging.

I'll leave it up for today, then replace it with something easier if nobody gets it.

pan6467 01-13-2006 11:04 AM

I'll say drayton mcclane but the guy who owned the Cowboys Tex Schram? seems to ring a bell...... nope I'm wrong

flstf 01-13-2006 11:13 AM

Kenny Rogers?

Martian 01-13-2006 11:13 AM

EDIT : Finally! flstf takes it.

You're up.

flstf 01-13-2006 11:25 AM

Which artist performed her Oscar-winning song at the ceremony accompanied by a group of deaf kids but complaints that their signing was completely incomprehensible led to an admission that they were in fact rounded up from a local school and could all hear perfectly well. This was also the number one song that year, a one hit wonder.

God of Thunder 01-13-2006 12:21 PM

Debby Boone, "You Light Up My Life"?

Man, I'm sad to even know that song.

flstf 01-13-2006 12:23 PM

Yep, you got it God of Thunder.
Incidentally, I really hate that song. :)

roachboy 01-13-2006 12:41 PM

what's not to hate, really?
trivial groundrule question: are the topics here restricted to pop music? so if i were to ask which synth/tape music composer began her career as an assistant to pierre henry, would that be within the rules of the game? for example.

Martian 01-13-2006 02:02 PM

roachboy - It's not at all restricted to pop music, as my Tom Waits question would seem to indicate (although I suppose it could be argued that's an Eagles question). So your question about Eliane Radigue would be perfectly acceptable. ;)

Just remember that the more obscure you go, the higher the chance of it being a stumper.

Fly 01-13-2006 03:58 PM

bring it to us roachboy...........don't be shy man.

God of Thunder 01-13-2006 04:10 PM

You're afraid of obscure when I just answered a question about Debby Boone??

Let's stick with obscure then.

In 1983 Brian May was working on a solo project EP, what guitarist did he get to help him, and for bonus points, name the project.

flstf 01-13-2006 04:35 PM

Brian and Eddie Van Halen
Star Fleet Project

roachboy 01-13-2006 06:52 PM

nice, martian.....yes,

is stumping everyone a good thing?

btw: i just got ms. radigue's "trilogie de la mort"...
i am 3 or 4 minutes into kailasha.
while i can still talk or write (this will not last long), i should say (i think) that nothing (and i mean nothing)....(i think....this sort of thing is hard to know, really)--has affected me like adnos--this over the past 5 years or so.
just amazing.

but if you are focussed on the drone by itself you are focussed on the wrong thing.

o, and stay in the sweet spot.
it's always better there.

Don't hate me!!

Fly 01-14-2006 07:15 AM

looks like flstf is up.........

i have that too GOT...very cool album actually.

flstf 01-14-2006 09:20 AM

Which Beatles' album was the inspiration for Otis Redding when he wrote "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay"?

Martian 01-14-2006 11:00 AM

That's an easy one. It was Sgt. Pepper.

Or if you want to be pedantic, the full name of the album is Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Kate Schellenbach drummed in a New York punk band in the early 80's known as the Young Aborigines. This band later changed names and switched styles, eventually dropping her from the line-up. They have since become international superstars.

What do we know them as today?

pan6467 01-14-2006 12:29 PM

This one I know because my ex wife was big into Lucious Jackson......... guess that right there should have told me she was a lesbian.

She played for the Beastie Boys......

Martian 01-14-2006 01:27 PM

Beastie Boys it is. She left not long after they recorded Cookie Puss due to 'creative differences'.

Your turn.

pan6467 01-14-2006 05:19 PM

Hmmmmmm...... The Bangles were big but at their height the Lead Singer wnet and made a movie who was the producer of that stinker of a movie?

God of Thunder 01-14-2006 07:51 PM

Probably her husband, Jay Roach. The same guy who did the "Austin Powers" movies.

Martian 01-14-2006 08:30 PM

I would assume you're talking about The Allnighter. Terrible film. I know it was directed by her mother, but I have no idea who produced it.

I suppose I could look it up on IMDB, but that seems like cheating somehow.

Fly 01-14-2006 08:49 PM

just wanted to say to Martian..........

MORE COWBELL BABY!!!!!!!!

carry on and,my apologize

That was the answer I was looking for her mother.

Martian 01-15-2006 04:09 AM

Okay, this one's just for flyman, then.

I mean anyone can answer it, but.. yeh. flyman.

The line in my signature is from a famous Saturday Night Live skit starring Christopher Walken, Will Ferrel and Blue Oyster Cult. In 2005, what band mixed audio from that skit into one of their hit songs, then released the result as the 'Contradictor remix' as a B-Side on the single of that very song?

Martian 01-15-2006 05:01 PM

Oh, come on. This one isn't that hard. My sister could get it. Or a neanderthal.

I'll leave it up overnight and if nobody manages it then I'll go for something a bit easier.

Martian 01-16-2006 04:11 AM

Gah, I tried to drop subtle hints in the above post. The band was Queens of the Stone Age and the song was Little Sister.

Alright, an easier one.

What 60's rocker is quoted as saying "Before Elvis, there was nothing"?

Fly 01-16-2006 09:19 AM

that'd have to be John Lennon man.

Martian 01-16-2006 03:18 PM

It would have to be John Lennon.

Your turn.

Fly 01-16-2006 07:29 PM

who was it (actor)...... that starred in Fatboy slim's Weapon of choice video?

*i got nothin'.......sorry for the cheesy, easy one*
