My girlfriend's roommate bought me Bob Dylan's Modern Times and, my favourite new CD, Corb Lund's Hair In My Eyes Like a Highland Steer
It'll make anyone like country.

At the moment I'm concentrating on replacing my old vinyl collection. My last purchase, which I found in a second-hand record shop was the album Over by Peter Hammill.

Yesterday I bought Blair Harvey & The Dregs.
Blair is a local musician who plays about 3 or5 gigs a week in various bars around St. John's. His style is best described as rockabilly/blues. Listen to his stuff here: http://www.myspace.com/blairharvey

The Shins - Wincing the Night Away
Had the leaked mp3s since November, but somehow still couldn't wait til I had the actual CD. Great first half, okay second half. Chutes Too Narrow remains their best album by far.

Jenny Lewis and The Watson Twins was amazing. Really enjoyed The Creek Drank The Paddle which I just picked up. Not as good as Our Endless Numbered Days but I still enjoyed it.

Congrats on getting these four albums! Yea/Nay on Camera Obscura? You can probably guess why I'm asking. ------------------ Bought today at Amoeba Music (all used): Eleni Mandell - Miracle of Five Its not actually released until February 6, so this is probably a promo or advance copy. Either way I had to grab it because Eleni Mandell is my current favorite female solo artist, and has been for at least the past 5 years. Tralala - Tralala One of the most fun albums of 2005/2006. Listen to: All Fired Up A Camp - A Camp Nina Persson from the Cardigans side project. Was the prelude and possibly major factor in the sound that came from the Cardigans following album "Long Gone Before Daylight". I thoroughly enjoyed both of these albums. Note: This is an Import title and only cost $8.00. Buy? YES. Ryan Adams - Gold Probably the only Ryan Adams album I can listen to from beginning to end. Conjure One - Extraordinary Ways I haven't decided if I like this album (Rhys Fulber) or Delerium - Nuages du Monde (Rhys Fulber & Bill Leeb) Nina Gordon - Bleeding Heart Graffiti Because I really liked her album "Tonight and the Rest of My Life" from 2000. And the song of the same title. After she left Veruca Salt. Sixpence None The Richer - Divine Discontent Leigh Nash has a wonderful voice. Anyone remember the rest of the band? Sadly, no. It could have been Leigh Nash & Sixpence None The Richer, or Sixpence Featuring Leigh Nash for all we know. In any case, lovely album. *edit - fixed broken img tag that I didn't notice earlier

spleen, I think that Conjure One CD was really disappointing. The first one was great though.
The last CD I bought was Front Line Assembly - Artificial Soldier. I was surprised to find it at Best Buy when I was trolling through, looking for a way to blow the $20 gift certificate I got for Christmas. How is it? Well, for FLA, I like Civilization a lot more, but its one of their best efforts anyways. This album plays like a "greatest hits" mashup... a mix of what was good about their old style with some of their new style flavor. Too bad there aren't any brilliant moments. My favorite track is Future Fail, featuring vocals from the Front 242 dude.

Lewis/Watsons, oddly enough, was my least favorite of the four. Bought it based on the cover of "Handle With Care" and... guess I was just expecting more or something. Plus, those other three satisfied me well. Beth Orton was a nice surprise, like Sarah McLachlan with much better consistency. (She never did top "Building a Mystery", as I see it.)

Sia - Colour the Small One
I heard her song Breathe Me on Sirius Channel 35 (Chill) and I got hooked. I'm also now hooked on that channel, too. I'm currently looking for an artist named Camille because I heard one of her songs called Ta Douleur on Sirius 35, as well.

*Edit - Since only listened to both albums once and only once each I'll have to refrain from making any further comments on either album. *Edit2 - warrrreagl, you just forced me to download Camille's Le Fil album off Soulseek. *Edit3 - Because it is going to combine the posts anyway for double posting - Just bought off Amazon, and should be receiving sometime next week: Hot Club of Cowtown - Continental Stomp Live album for the hot jazz/western swing band! Finally talked myself into getting it Beirut - The Gulag Orkestar Gypsyish or something from a guy out some midwest state. Very good, and interesting, listening Lady Sovereign - Public Warning Because I thought Random, A Little Bit Of Shh and Love Me Or Hate Me were good songs, dammit. Lily Allen - Alright, Still Finally got released in the states this week, huzzah!

* Edit 4 - because it probably will get merged with the above post of mine
Well this is kind of embarassing for myself. I was organizing my CDs, and I came across my Conjure One - Extraordinary Ways album. That I bought in 2005. So I now have two copies of the album, whoops! I guess it didn't make that much of an impact on me at the time then either since I bought it again as a used CD ($6 so not bank breaking).

Hank Williams - 24 of Hank Williams' Greatest Hits Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? Beck - Sea Change Erin McKeown - Grand Lily Allen - Alright, Still Of those, only heard Of Montreal in its entirety so far. And it's lots of fun. Never expected to hear something like "The Past is a Grotesque Animal" come out of that band.

I went to a show here in capital city to see a guy named Royal Wood. He's an up and comer Torontonian. He has a few albums out, but the one I purchased is called A Good Enough Day. Not a bad effort. If you want to sample a few tunes, I suggest "Juliet", "A Mirror Without" or "The Spirits and I".

+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+ Was out in the Hollywood area again and popped into Amoeba Music for used CD hunting TRALALA-is that the TRALALA Followup from their debut that I bought the last time I was in Amoeba. More fun rock! Bobby Bare Jr's Young Criminals Starvation League - the longest meow The band put on a great performance at the 2005 Austin City Limits festival on both the smaller stage to cover for an act that could not make it, and on one of the main stages. Hopefully this CD can help pin down their great live performance Lizzie West & the White Buffalo - I Pledge Allegience to Myself Her first album, Holy Road, was really really good. Now that she named her band as part of the artist, there may be a wider range of sounds. Everything But the Girl - Like The Deserts Miss The Rain Compilation that includes a lot of their early acoustic stuff. I remember downloading it about 4-5 years ago in college, but finally got around to buying this great partial 'best of' album

The Casket Lottery - Smoke and Mirrors
Feist - Let It Die Feist is a repurchase, after a loan to a friend turned indefinite. $6 used, so what the hey. Casket Lottery is emo hard rock along the lines of Cursive. The EP has three crap tracks and one solidly good title track, but $3 used, so what the hey. It was a what-the-hey kind of day.

I like the new Lucinda album...it's not much of a departure from her earlier albums and a few of the songs are a little...eh, baffling. Not as strong as others. It's pretty dark. Surprise! lol But I tend to like that about her. I like it and am glad to have it, but it hasn't blown me away

wife got 10 free album downloads via her frequent flier points so:
TV on the Radio - "Return to Cookie Mountain" (pretty good, but way overhyped) Starsailor - "On the Outside" (Brit rock without much substance, but I still love them) Sean Lennon - "Friendly Fire" (Really, really great) The Raconteurs - "Broken Boy Soldiers" (Look Ma! Rock n' Roll!) Metallica - "Kill Em' All" (One of those albums I never got around to buying on CD....guess I can throw my cassette away now) Thom Yorke - "The Eraser" (Definitely have to be in the right mood for this one) Flaming Lips - "At War With the Mystics" (Not quite as good as "Yoshimi", but still fantastic) Muse - "Black Holes and Revelations" (Not as good as "Absolution", but I like it) Last edited by Derwood; 02-24-2007 at 05:49 AM.. |

Fields - 7 From the Village Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde Cat Power - Moon Pix Peter Bjorn and John - Writer's Block Fields' "Song For the Fields" has been my favorite song for a couple weeks now. It's on their myspace page (although it's the newer LP version that strikes me as significantly less compelling).
