USGP - Indy
A week from Sunday the F1 circus comes to the US, specifically the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. F1 in most parts of the world (including Canada, which is this weekend) can be very expensive to attend, but not so at Indy. If you can drive in for race day, all you'll need is general admission tickets. Although you might be able to scalp decent tickets for not much more than track price. If you can't drive in and out in a day, camping close to the track is very reasonable. If you are a fan of motorsports do try to attend this at least once. Especially if you live in the midwest. The cars are absolutely amazing. There are no other race cars that have the performance parameters of F1. And the sound, the sound is amazing. Wear ear protection. You'll not regret it if you do.
I predict if you attend you'll become a fan. If anyone wants more information, ask here or PM me. I've been to all of the USGPs at IMS and can't wait for this year's. http://www.usgpindy.com/ |

Wow, I'd love to go see it!
Thanks for the linky, but as to seeing how I might get there, that is another thing.

Thanks for thinking of us other motorheads. I'm sure I'd love seeing it at Indy one of these days but no way I can make it this time.
This also reminds me of how disappointed I was when they stopped running F1 at Watkins Glen. I understand some of the safety concerns and economics, but I went to the Glen for F1 from the late '60's to the end in 1980 and always immensely enjoyed the weekends there, including camping at the track, stumbling toward ecstasy in the bog. To me, the hilly terrain of a track like the Glen is much more interesting than the basically flat layout at Indy ...though I drive the roadcourse setups at Pocono which are also flat, and while they are still great fun, driving (and watching) at the Glen is IMO an order of magnitude better. |

I went to the USGP in '02. A rather infamous ending if any F1 fans recall.
I have to say, if you are a fan of motorsports at all it is something you have to see. Watching cars rocket out of the banking and down the long straight only to have to make a 90 degree right hand turn is just awesome. I sat in what I think was called the Northwest bleachers and they were great seats, I could see almost half of the track. Bring ear plugs though

If anyone is going, make sure you take some time to stand at pit out. You're about 12 feet from the cars as they leave the speed restricted area of the pits. Amazing. You MUST wear ear protection. The first year I didn't. I now have a 30% loss of high frequency sound. I felt like I had stilettos in my ears. Its also a great area to take pictures.
I agee that the track sucks being flat and boring. It seems like much of F1 today has gone to more of a technical track design. But since I'm only a little over 2 hours away, it doesn't suck that much. There is nothing like F1. Absolutely nothing. |
