What's your atmosphere like when writing?
Pretty much what the title suggests. I get quite uncomfortable sitting at my desk for extended periods. I was thinking of trying a laptop and either going to the park, or sitting on the couch. What works best for you? What let's you focus well? etc.
One of my main problems is that I can't find proper chairs to sit in because of my height. All the curves are set 6-8 inches too low. So I end up slouching, with my feet up, looking up at my monitor. When I was younger I could sit comfortable like this for hours. Now my body can't stand it for more than 20 minutes and I pay for it later with stiffness and soreness. |

As insular as possible. No one in the apartment, sealed up in my room, with headphones on.

Typically in my room, at night. I write poetry in my notebook when I have insomnia, but I have written two or three poems on my comp and then transcribed them later.

I know this sounds weird, and probably doubly so for my American colleagues, but my most enjoyable and productive writing seems to take place at my favorite bar. It's nice and quiet, very low key, and has delicious food. I sit down towards the end where no one bothers me, the bartenders know me and know I'm writing and only bug me when my glass is empty, and after spilling a few complete or partial thoughts, its nice to look up and soak in some humanity to recharge.

Once upon a time I was enamoured with the figure of The Writer. This tortured, eccentric sole displayed aspects of King, Hemingway andwhoever else I happened to be enamoured with at the time. He was the sort of fellow who would do things like sit under bridges with a notepad and a chewed old Bic pen and (optionally) a bottle of scotch.
I got over it. The art is the important part. You write wherever you're most comfortable.

It doesn't matter. The outside world recedes and leaves me alone to match my thoughts with words.

usually in the morning while drinking coffee. i can't quite tell if i'm transcribing dreams or making something up.
editing, which is most of the actual work, is more diffuse, less ritualized, so less bound to a time of day.

When I'm writing a paper, I enjoy making my bed a workspace. It offers ample space to spread out my reference materials, and it's a cushy surface no matter how I choose to sit.
I have a bunch of pillows easily accessible, and I shift positions often. I will usually start by sitting cross-legged with my laptop propped up on a pillow, resting on top of a large book in my lap. When my body begins to become stiff, I will often work while stretching. I do this by stretching out a leg to the side and placing my laptop directly on a thin book on the bed just out of reach so I work with a straight back. There are a few other stretches that are entirely too difficult to describe - basically any position that feels comfortable but provides a mild stretch. When I get up to use the restroom or slap together a meal, I will do a quick set of 50 jumping jacks, to get my blood flowing. By the evening I usually end up nestled in bed with my laptop on my legs, my body wedged between two pillows to hold the reference materials with which I'm actively working. When it comes time for bed, I can set the stack of laptop + references on my nightstand take a relaxing bath, then fall asleep. I have my work within grasp when I wake up in the morning, fresh with ideas. This method is great for marathon writing sessions. I can go several days in excellent comfort with this setup. I used to work on the floor, but when my back and bum started hurting after several years of doing this, I decided to give the bed a try. Keep in mind that the bed method is not good if you're prone to insomnia: bed = work vs. bed = sleep. Putting away my materials and taking a relaxing bath to unwind before bed makes this an easier transition for me.

I like to write at the local bar, on a quiet night with no crowd and no juke box. Sip on diet soda, occasionally look up at the big screen tv, and write. I use pen and paper there. Later at home, I edit and rewrite as I type it into the computer. I have a comfy chair with arm rests. It works best when the kids have gone to bed, or on my day off when the kids are in school. It's very hard to write with a loud movie on the tv, kids arguing, or people talking to me.
