Movies to F--- With Your Mind

The only reason its dashed out is because the school server blocks pages with swears... damn them. Still, I really love movies that truly mess with your mind. Stuff like Donnie Darko, Identity, The Cell, Memento. What are some other really excellent movies that screw with your head at the end.

"It's absurd.
The search for God is absurd?
It is if everyone dies alone.
Does that scare you?
I don't want to be alone."

EDIT: If you shake your head in absolute amazement while or after seeing a movie, it's a mind fuck!

How about the Usual Suspects? I'm not sure if that qualifies, but at the end I was surprised- and that made the movie.

I think there is a sigificant difference between movies that fuck with one's perception of reality:

IE: Donnie Darko, Identity, The Cell, Memento

...and those that simply have a surprise twist at the end:

IE: The Sixth Sense, Usual Suspects, The Crying Game

Those in the frist group are more "systemically" twisted in that the whole fabric of the movie is off centre. Where as those in the second group just poke you right at the very end.

What a great topic. I love running into Donnie Darko fans. Have you seen the new Director's Cut. It's great - totally goes into the Time Travel book more. It's available now on DVD.

One of my favorites in this category would be Dream With the Fishes. A real tripped out flick, neat indie pick - about how you use the time you have. Check it out.

I don't know if Thin Red Line qualifies, but i think it does, as it messes with your head on sort of a medatative level. Another favorite of mine...

Agree on Jacob's Ladder (and some others above). One freaky movie.

These are not neccessarily fucked up movies (although some are), but they have fucked up twists:
Frailty
Psycho
Fight Club
Seven
Swimming Pool
Vanilla Sky
Primal Fear
Angel Heart
Arlington Road
No Way Out
Matchstick Men
The Game
The Life of David Gale
12 Monkeys

I always saw Saw as more of a suprise ending than a total mind-fuck. I mean, while the whole conecpt of the movie was a bit twisted, it didn't quite mess with your preception like Donnie Darko and Memento.

The Game is great too. I saw it a few years ago, I loved it but my mom had to watch it like 3 times and she was still confused as all hell.

I love movies that make you really, /really/ think. Did anyone mention 21 Grams yet? That's a great trippy movie. Lost in Translation really makes you look at things differently. Cant forget The Virgin Suicides too.

Alot of the movies we're mentioning are released in the US by Focus Features, they make alot of indie-feel raw movies. At least recently. Check their website: http://www.focusfeatures.com/home.php

Yes, you beat me to it. I agree its not a surprise what ends up happening, but from the beginning of the film the tension and overall badness of what these people are doing to themselves keeps growing and growing until the viewer feels like breaking under the pressure. Not a "feel-good" movie in the least. (But I like it!)

Usual Suspects, definitely. As retsuki03 says, the ending had me thinking for about an hour after I had finished the movie. It was superbly put together.

Matchstick Men, of course, has the same type of ending. The relatively tame plot really opened up with the ending and gave a whole lot more depth to the characters.

Pi, yes! One of my favourite movies of all time.

Disappointed to see that only one person has thought of Cube It's pretty ridiculous, but if you don't like gore, I don't recommend it.

Lastly, I once watched The 25th Hour while I was really tired and it tripped me out, I don't know why, hahaha.

Frailty, The Game, 12 Monkeys... yeah mind fucks. Magnolia was just one of those movies that makes you realize that you are no longer sitting in your chair... and you are in a sitting position in the middle of your living room.

The Crying Game... Not a mind fuck... just really really "weird"...

I'd have to agree, even though I suggested it, that The Crying Game isn't a mind fuck for most, but when it came out it was definately a mind fuck for many.

La Jetee (which is what 12 Monkeys was based on) was a good mind fuck...

Arlington Road was a good film, not a mind fuck for the viewer as much as a mind fuck for the characters.... It makes you squirm as a result.

Hypercube is that most odious of specimens... the sequel created to capitalize on the success of the first film.

You should note that the writer/director of the film wasn't involved in the sequel. You might also not know that Cube was a student film (part of the Features First program at the Canadian Film Centre) and was a *huge* hit in France and Japan (huge).

so true. I really enjoyed Cube and then was so ticked that the sequel was that bad. Should've figured that would happen.

Apparently, the third Cube movie "Cube Zero" is already out on DVD. Looks like it's a prequel.

From http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...396239-7616924:
Quote:
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Following the grisly 1997 Cube and its 2002 sequel, Cube 2: Hypercube, Cube Zero stretches the original's The Twilight Zone-like, strangers-in-a-box theme a little thin. Fortunately, there's a difference this time. The hero is not just another disoriented captive of the Cube's interconnected--often lethal--rooms, but rather a geek named Eric (Zachary Bennett) who sits in a control station wrestling with his conscience about inflicting misery on innocent people. Taking orders over the phone from some almighty, unknown power in a distant office, Eric reaches a breaking point and enters the maze himself, intent on helping a woman (Stephanie Moore) who doubts his motives. The existential bent of the prior films becomes even more Kafkaesque this time with the arrival of a white-collar team of tormentors, bureaucratic tyrants who can't or won't explain the point of the Cube. Imaginative writer-director Ernie Barbarash rescues what might have been a tedious formula flick. --Tom Keogh

Description
Every nightmare has a beginning. In this prequel to the cult hit Cube, one of the most successful sci-fi thrillers of the last decade, a new group of unwilling participants frantically moves through an ominous construct of cube-shaped rooms. Each room holds the threat of hideously inventive and painful death. Finding the real exit, however, may not offer the freedom one seeks.
From the featured user comments for Cube Zero on http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0377713/:
Quote:
Having watched all three films, and listened to their director's commentaries I'm slowly beginning to unfold the mystery which surround the CUBE.

This is the film that should have followed the original, this film had all of it's best qualities, with much the same levels of tension and action. However the main difference is that for the first time, we catch a glimpse of the powers that be and the world outside the CUBE.

There are still very few scenes given depth and variation by a wide range of camera work and lighting. Once again we find ourselves following the activities of a diverse bunch of characters, however in this film the skills and histories of these individuals are not as important as in the first film.

This is a fantastic title which tributes the impressive original, if you were disappointed by Hypercube, watch this, and it WILL restore your faith in the CUBE story.

Flashdance. Here is the plot summary from IMDb.com:

Quote:
Alex Owens is a female dynamo: steel worker by day, exotic dancer by night. Her dream is to get into a real dance company, though, and with encouragement from her boss/boyfriend, she may get her chance. The city of Pittsburgh co-stars. What a feeling!
I am serious when I say this movie fucks with my mind. Maybe the lame plot, the extreme 80's feel... the fact it made a ton of money...
