Question about Henna (slightly off topic)
I posted pictures of my back photochopped with a tattoo that I designed and I'd love to find some nice henna and have a good artist use the picture as a guide. I had a small tattoo done years ago with henna but don't know what quality it was or anything but it lasted a good while. I'd love to find an extremely strong mix and let it sit for as long as possible so I could get the full effect for days to come of living with a semi-serious tattoo. If the artist did a good enough job, I could see myself going back a few times just to see how sure I am about the tat.
So can you recomend a good mix or give me some tips? Thanks guys -tim

I bought a henna kit once from Longs or RiteAid or something and nothing showed up.
I just asked one of my friends who regularly uses henna. She says if you buy premade, get the brand called "Brite." If you want to mix it yourself, you buy the powder (no brand name according to her) at a Persian or Indian store. She says Brite is easier in application, but if you want longer lasting, darker henna, mix it yourself.

Mix it yourself. Study up on it, there are many resources available for free on the net. Find an Indian market. They often use it to colour hair and condition it as well, so it may be marketed that way. The powder is all the same, whichever application you choose. The biggest thing for "strong" is FRESH! Old stuff, and pre-made stuff is normally long past it's shelf life.
Also, we ALWAYS reccomend that you leave it on overnight, or 8-12 hours. You can cover it up with Nu-Skin, or with saranwrap to keep it from coming off onto clothes or bedsheets.. Occasional treating with sugared lemon juice can be helpful as well, because the acid causes it to absorb into the skin better, and the sugar kind of helps give it a protective coating. Good luck and happy tattooing.. (ALSO: when looking on the net, it is often called mehndi as well as henna)

Thanks a lot for the info. You say 8-12 hours huh? That's quite a lot longer than I expected to do, but I'd figure the longer the better. I'm sure it would vary from person to person, but how long do you think a fresh batch would last if left on a light-skinned person for ~10 hours?
Thanks again -Tim

-Ever-,
The time is the thing there, that and FRESH Henna.. make it, and use it all or throw it away within a week or so. (It goes farther than you think!) Leaving it on for shorter times give lighter, less durable designs. 10 hours is fine.. I don't know that I could tell the difference between 8 or more... but anyway, THere are a number of factors that will directly affect the length of time that Tat will last. IF you get good fresh henna, and IF you mix it well, and IF you leave it on overnight, then you should get 2-3 weeks out of it. It ALSO depends on the area that you put it (thicker skin is better) and washing it / wearing clothes that rub on it, will make it fade much faster. (It doesn't stain all the way thru the skin, so as the skin wears off and is replaced, then too, is the design) Another thing I would say is experiment. You are going to find certain consistancies work better for you.. It should be about like toothpaste, and I personally prefer to work with a bottle with a tube from the tip. Many others prefer the cone. I think my airbrush usage probably directly affects my preference for a similar feeling bottle... Experiment on an area easily covered by clothes.. so if you mess up, and it LASTS then you don't have to call in sick for 3 weeks.... Cheers
