Abstract Ink Collage
Done for an Art class. We were to make abstract ink drawings with non traditional tools, then cut them into 2" squares and rearrange them on a 6"x13" grid.
I've got another one to do this weekend (12"x18") I'll post it if I get it around to scanning it. thoughts? comments? criticism? please don't remind me some of the square edges are visible I already know this. ps: I really wish I could show a larger version but size limitations on attachments here really suck

Thats pretty cool. Sorry i don't really know anything/much about art, well computer graphics maybe, but that doesn't really count. Anyways i think it looks cool, if that means anything to you
I think it looks like a hurricane wreck or confusion, chaos. What exactly do you study or do? |

I'm a graphic design student, although to be honest I've only had two history of design classes, one practical design class, art appreciation, art history, and beginning drawing (I switched to graphic design from computer science last fall)... I still have a lot more classes to take.
this was done for my intermediate drawing class, this assignment was more about arranging a composition than representing anything, so it doesn't really mean anything. my goal was to create flowing forms that carried across the whole composition. I like the hurricane reference, I suppose if I had to name it I'd call it "whimsical chaos" I don't like the way the second one is coming out as much, but I still need to add another layer to it.

That's cool. You did a good job, with what sounds like a fun process. I would be interesting to see the image before it was cut up into squares. How large was the original image? What kind of ink and paper did you use? What "non traditional" tools did you use? The composition keeps the eye in the piece which is good, but I feel like I settle kind if near the middle, in the light spot next to the big curve. I wish my eye moved aroud a little more. It is very cool, keep up the good work, and share next on when it is finished.

thx for the comments, the original was done in india ink on a 18x24" piece of newsprint. the darker and fuzzy lines were done by wetting the paper first. The tools I used I mostly found on the ground. The thin lines were done with a handful of pine needles I bundled together. Some of the thicker, straighter lines were done with a sharp piece of plastic I found. I think the reason I don't like the second one as much is because I hardly used the pine needles at all... oh well.
oh, and since the space on my wall is limited, I put it on my wall vertically, like this. which one looks better?

I love india ink....It would be great if you color underneath the ink a gradient with a color. Put ink all over the top, and then carve out the patterns. I love color.

that looks really cool. i love the kind of assn's art classes have sometimes. ^_^ wouldn't ever think to do them on my own. remindss me of an assignment i had to do. except it was in charcoal. and it didn't involve cut and paste but it was the same sort of abstract concept.
yours is better anyway :-D i like how free flowing it is i also think the vertical works better for me anyway

To me it looks like an asian print depicting a war or battle. Right in the middle of it.. I see a head in the upper left portion (head)in a bold aggressive moment whos just killed someone (large round object in the front)-in their moment of death, with such anger and slaughtering frenzy going on around them.
Anyways... I like the piece when its positioned vertically. Kinda late for this, but...I love it. Creative and expressive(to me).Really, really love it...nice work. Thanks for posting. |

i love this idea, too.
when i get a chance i'm gonna try it with some photos & see what happens. as for vertical or horizontal... i can't decide. looks hot both ways. as for size limitations of attachments... i'll say it again: get a photobucket account & then you can link your images. http://photobucket.com
