This isn't quite as ridiculous as it sounds. The pill not only works to prevent fertilization, but it also helps prevent already fertilized eggs from implanting in the uteran lining. So, from the pro-life perspective (that life begins at conception), that action is analogous to abortion.

Just a few thoughts:
The sperm and egg are not life forms. They are gametes, which are types of cells. One can no more kill an egg or sperm than one can kill a blood cell (like when one bleeds, say when crucified).

which is why I posted what I posted. The pill sometimes works to prevent fertilized eggs from implanting in the uteran lining. That's a different argument than saying killing sperm or an unfertilized egg is killing a human life.

Basically, this argument isn't particularly more or less outrageous than other pro-life arguments. It, like most every other pro-life argument, hinges on the belief that once an egg is fertilized then it is a life. Disagree with it, but that's not the same as saying the pill is bad because it kills unfertilized eggs.

Actually, God is responsible for abortions according to the Bible. He decides the circumstances involving one's birth and death.

I used to collect old medical books ... my favorite is a late 1800's "gynecology" textbook--whew--the things they did back then. Ladies, if you think a modern speculum is bad just imagine the fricken' shoe horns they used in the 1880s.

I have an old "medical" "textbook" written from a Catholic point-of-view from the early 20th century. I don't have the title right now since it's in storage and I'm at work.

Anyway, from the writer of the book's (a Catholic doctor) point-of-view ANY miscarriage is called an abortion; and it's always the mother's fault. No matter what. So this webpage (as detestable as it is) fits right in.

For more "fun" reading I like the chapter on "monsters" (aka, children with birth defects) and how it's ALWAYS the mother's fault.

think of it more as "releasing" babies into the wild. also it´s exercising so you´re strengthening your genes so the next generation of god´s children will be superior.

My government teacher from my senior year of high school liked to tell all of the female students on birth control that the pill was equivalent to having an abortion every month.

He was also on his local government and liked to talk about the neighbor who pointed a cannon at his house on a regular basis. Seems I'm not the only person who considers him a big jerk.

A fertilized egg is STILL not life, unless you consider ANY pair of connected cells to be a living creature. In which case, you may need to take biology again. Hell, bacteria have more cells than that. And the bible thumpers don't care if you take antibiotics. Life = life, no?

Listen, I agree that the argument this website puts forth is a faulty one. My point is simply that the overall response here is a bit of an overreaction. If you're going to critique someone else's argument, it's important to understand their point of view, and pro-life people believe that life begins at conception. They don't say the pill kills babies because it prevents unfertilized eggs from implanting; they believe the pill kills babies because it prevents fertilized eggs from implanting. Their argument against the pill is no more ludicrous than any other argument they make against abortion. I happen to be fine with abortion, regardless of when life "starts," and so I don't agree with their argument. But their point of view on the pill is generally consistent with their general opinion on abortions, and to act like this is somehow even more loony than the general pro-life sentiment isn't appropriate.

Honestly, I find this comment a bit out of line.

I find the hype highlighted in this thread highly uninformed and a disgraceful representation of christian-related religious beliefs. It is sad to me that it has been given this level of attention.

I am Roman Catholic. I tend to consider myself respectful of life. Still, I'm a die-hard Libertarian and don't see why the government should have any pull on people's ability to cease reproduction. I find other methods of contraception (NFP / selective abstinence) highly effective in my personal life. I have never used the pill, nor do I desire to. My sister had 4 kids while on the pill. I'd just rather be savy of my own body and weigh my decisions rather than depending on some hormone-altering mess.

You should express this opinion on a pro-life message board. I bet you'll find some who will gladly take you up on the challenge.

That doesn't make any sense. The only purposefully fertilized eggs sold, that I've heard of are balut.

There is evidence that the occasional fertilized egg slips through but to purposefully cultivate and sell fertilized eggs doesn't makes sense. The economics of it are all wrong and there is no added value to the consumer (who would have to pay a premium for this sort of egg).

Sounds fishy to me.
