Since I work at a web hosting company I get web hosting pretty much for free. But, it's tough to come up with original ideas, not to mention how much time it really involves. I find that is my main bottleneck for what I can do.
I would pick something that interests you and see what you can do to help the existing community out there. For example, I love history - would love to start some kind of archive service. I did start a History forum that isn't popular at all but has a few visitors (
http://thehistoryforum.net).
One of the more gratifying things I've done is set up a website for a friend's sister that just got a transplant 2 weeks ago. It's been set up for a few months now while they were waiting for the organ; and I set it up as a "Journal" (blog) and they use it once or twice a day to keep everyone updated. They tell me that it saves them several hours a day because they are not calling people all the time like they used to (The girl the journal is for, she's been having all kinds of problems since she was little, and is now 22). I've thought of hosting free journals for transplant patients. Again that is something I'd love to do but it is just the time restraint.
Let us know how your idea goes! You could definately find help with anything you do from these forums. Props to Halx
