Any class 3 owners here?

I'm a newbie to the site. I'm happily surprised at how pro-gun the admins here are. I'm wondering: Who has (actually has, as opposed to wants) papered class 3 weapons?

In my safe (legally) reside:

MG-34
MP-40
Buncha Reisings (the Poor Man's Thompson)
Buncha Macs
Buncha Maxim/Vickers variants
The odd registered sear, with or without guns for them
Other odds and ends

I miss my SOT....

Nice. I'm among the wishes, not the haves. Given the restrictions locally (geographic, not legal), I'll likely never own. Simply too difficult to find a range that allows Class 3 weapons.

Well, there's always the biannual Knob Creek shoot in Kentucky that you can go to. They rent spots out on the lower range, or if you know people, you can sometimes cage a shooting badge for the main line.

Best bet for shooting class 3: Find a "buddy" out in the middle of nowhere that has enough land and doesn't mind irritating the neighbors. You bring the toys and ammo, get him to provide the place to shoot. Symbiosis at it's finest!!!

Wow, you have a nice selection. Especially the MP40, I live in the Republic of Kalifornia, so trying to obtain anything remotely decent is close to impossible.

I'm calling BS on this one. That's at LEAST $100,000 worth of weapons. An MG34 is $25,000+, $15,000+ for each of those Maxim/Vickers guns, $5,000+ for each Reising and about the same for the MP-40. Sears are pretty high too, usually in the $5000-$8000 dollar range, and if there's a gun to go along with it, that puts the total price well over $10,000 per. The Macs are the cheapest, at $3000-ish per.

Unless you're a Plastic Surgeon, lawyer, or C-III dealer, there's no way someone who writes the way you do ( see the bear thread ) could own that many rare and expensive toys. Either you're a rich gun-newbie who blew a bunch of money in a hurry ( which would explain your rediculous advocacy of carrying an MG34 for bears ) and just doesn't know much yet, or you're full of it. The VAST majority of C-III owners are "Gun Culture" people ala Henry Bowman, who would never say some of the rediculous things you said in the "Bears?" thread. If you really do own such weapons, more power to ya, and I apologize in advance. However, this whole thing smells funky.

The Dunedan, when I bought my MG-34, I paid $2600 for it. I bought my first reising for $300. I paid $1400 for my MP-40. I once bought 50 M11/9mms @$375 each, sold half right away, and kept the rest and have been doling them out in dribs and drabs. Sears? Bought a bunch of them in 1986 after FOPA passed @$80 each. I bought a bunch of Maxim sideplates for $700 a pop, and the MOST I ever paid for a Vickers was $3700, but I haven't bought one in years. I never had to get a CLEO signoff until 1999, after I gave up my SOT. For those not familiar with the terminology, "SOT" = "special occupational taxpayer" = "class 3 dealer"

BTW, the saying "IANAL" doesn't apply to me. I singlehandedly cover most of a certain Warren Zevon song.

Daswig,
I apologize for my presumptive statements. The prices I quoted were the ones I had seen on www.gunbroker.com and urbanarmoury.com. Sadly, they price of C-III stuff is headed for orbit as we speak.

dunedan, not a problem. Some people buy stock. I used to buy guns. And my class 3 investments have far outperformed the stock market, so the wife doesn't give me too much flak when I buy stuff, since I can always sell it later. Of course, given the happenings in Stewart, my investments hopefully will take a serious nosedive soon.

BTW, not all of my things end up being profitable. I think I've got something like 800 NIW chinese AK mags left (out of a thousand bought), stashed in one of my storage areas, that I paid $8.75 a pop for back in 1994, figuring that the AW ban would never sunset in fact. If I gave a shit, I'd find them and sell them. OTOH, it never hurts to keep stuff squirrelled away. But if I had ditched all of my high-cap stuff at the peak, I'd have been able to buy some more nice stuff.

As another BTW/FYI, "Henry Bowman" is generally seen as a pseudonym, taken from the lead character in JR's "Unintended Consequences". There may be a real person with that name out there, but when you talk in the "gun culture" about somebody of that name, people will generally assume that it's false.

I take it you hang out on the Hippy's Board?

Daswig,
I was referring to the fictional Mr. Bowman. I've always found the character to be quite representative of most members of the Gun Culture; myself included. ( Wish I had his financial resources, but that's another story entirely. )

Hey dunedan, since you had moments of doubts about me, I thought I'd grab the first three guns in the safe, take a pic of them, and post them for you. BTW, just playing with the caption, but I figured I needed to put something in there so you'd know it was not just a copy of a pic from another site or something.

this is my first attempt of posting a pic to here, so be gentle iff'n you get Rexed. BTW, does this qualify as Gun Porn? All actors are over 18...

On a more serious note, thats very nice. Ive always wanted some of those exact weapons. Im a huge history buff, especially WWII, and owning some of those firearms would be incredible.

If you want to buy them, NOW is the time. They tend to appreciate between 20-50% a year.

I paid $4300 for those three guns a while back (1980's-early 1990's), and if I were to sell them now, they'd go for OVER $40K for the trio.

BAD MONKEY!!! This MG-34 is MINE!!! SMACK!!! SMACK!!!

Actually, I really, really like the Reising. It has a few minor flaws. Paramount is that the charging handle is concealed in the foregrip. If you have meaty hands like I do, and grab it too tightly, it'll take the skin off of part of your hand. Hence the green tie thingy (not the sling, the other tie thingy), as a reminder. The other big flaw is that it likes to be kept clean. By clean, I mean cleaned every 500 rounds or so, which isn't long at all. Given the uses I use it for (plinking, generally) this isn't a big deal

Now the 34 is my BABY. Shooting it is by far the funnest thing you can do with your clothes on. Well, OK, getting Hillary in a courtroom with a subpoena would be more fun, but hey, I've got a pretty twisted idea of fun, it was issued with the J.D. The 34 can be finicky, but when it runs, it runs like a scalded ape, which is good. We're talking 900 rpm of 7.92 wholesome goodness. That's a 250 round burst in under 20 seconds, and that will rip a car to pieces pretty good. Pull one of those while having a heart attack, and the coroner ain't NEVER gonna get the smile off your face. Seriously...a big burst on the '34 is almost the emotional equivalent of my child being born. You just keep grinning and grinning and grinning...

Now, everybody talks about how much fun Uzis are. I was really disappointed with my Uzi. Yeah, it shot OK, and the first thing I ditched was the cheesy folding stock for a nice IMI wood stock, but still. Frankly, I'd take the supressed STEn over the Uzi for just about everything, INCLUDING "serious social purposes".

Reminds me. I gotta go shooting soon.

I gotta agree with that. I too would love to own some of that stuff - although I know the 34 is a more "quality" weapon, the MG-42 would be my choice if I could afford one. I've fired both the 34 and the 42 at my gun club's annual machine gun shoot and they are both awesome, the sound of the 42 is like no other weapon (well the GE Minigun and Quad .50 we had 2 years ago sounded pretty cool too).

I didn't care much for the Uzi I fired either (microUzi I believe). It kept jamming every 2-3 shots (pf course that was at the end of a long day of shooting so I suppose that may have been a factor).

I've shot them side-by-side, and the ROF on the 42 is so fast that your shoulder doesn't have enough time to recover from the recoil. In a heavy mount (ie a tripod or pintle mount of some form) that's not a big deal, but if you're firing off of a bipod, the '42 is pretty much impossible to control, and the '34 is much easier.

Yeah, I'll agree with that - I actually fired the '42 off an AA tripod as well as the bipod, and holy christ was that hard to handle.

I have a few at home. I'm still into the small stuff. Uzi, M11/9, MP5, FNC, M16. But, it's a nice rounded collection. Now if I could afford all of the ammo to go through each one all the time....
