The Armoured Cav
Here are some pics from my trip to Israel. These are some of the tanks I ran into when I was in the north about 30 meters away from the border with Lebanon during the war.
Just for fun, can anyone ID it? |

That first picture looks like you're in the wrong place!
Those are their own Merkava Mk 3.

Haha, it was a bit unerving to "look down the barrel of a gun". Especially such a big one. The Israeli soldiers were really nice actually, after they go over the initial shock of a tourist wandering around up there.
Is the Merkava Mk3 modeled after a US tank? Damn dude, you know your stuff. |

Apparently it's their own stuff. I didn't recognize them vs. the classical stuff (that I barely know) so looked it up. They buy some components (engines, etc) and make the rest themselves. For whatever reasons (I'm intentionally avoiding) they couldn't get the quantity or quality they wanted from major powers so decided to become self-sufficient.
The Mk 4 is their most recent version. Specs show it's on par with anything made today perhaps minus the armor. Yet. I'd better also avoid the rapid advancement they seem to have managed on their own. (cough)

More than you wanted to know, no doubt
The Merkava is a completely Israeli design. The designers had a different approach to the design, compared to other MBTs. The History channel had a show about the Merkava a long time ago, I wouldn't be surprised if it is still aired occassionally.

Is that a PKM mounted on top of the tank?

No, it is an FN MAG. It is very similar to the M-240 we use here in the 'States.
Edit - The Merkava is a great tank, but it'd focus is on crew survivability, not tank survivability. The Israelis were not able to use modern composite or ERA armor on their tanks, so they integrated all of the automotive systems into the armor package. It is an extremely good tank at what is does, but I would not put it up against an M1-A2 or a Leopard 2 A6 in the open.
