If you have firewire microsoft has an update
to make your I pod work http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;242975 for USB the only thing I've found so far is some joker who claims to have reversed engeniered the Win98 mass storage driver to work with ipod .....he makes you send $5 paypal then E mails it..... http://win98.drivers.w.interia.pl/ipod.html I'll keep looking though. |
paid the 5 bucks.
crap doesnt work. I plug the Ipod in, but I dont get any prompt, cant get past step 4 :( anyone here have Ipod and windows 98, I can mail you the software and you can try to get it to work. |
Out of curiosity, what's keeping you from upgrading the machine?

if it does you can manually install the driver.(Win98_USB.inf) http://img279.imageshack.us/img279/9681/ipod0qa.jpg |

lazyness... and I want to be able to play the old Lucas Arts X-wing and Tie0Fighter games, I dont think I can do tjhat with Windows 2k Pro |
I don't think that it will work properly, besides Win98SE has some Mass Storage driver issues along with other USB related problems that make it not 100% for using with all USB devices.

ok, that actually got me somewhere, I found the unknown device properties, then I do the update driver, but when I point it to the folder that the .INF file was unpacked too, its just not taking it, Windows cannot locate a driver for this device... The .INF file is there in that folder, I can see it! FOr some reason, the thing wont let me just select the .INF file... |
USB1 is awful
I have XP but USB1 ports I have to restart my computer after using a USB mass storage device But it still works The Ipod software will not work on Win98 You have to use third party software like winamp w/ Ipod plugin |
I dont want Itunes..
I just want to use it as a storage device.. |

the only thing I can think of is try a different set of drivers above have you tried to use the add new hardware from the control panel? Are you using 98 or 98SE? If you have win2000 you could partition part of your HD for 2000 and leave the rest 98 |

Have you formated your ipod on a win XP/2000 computer?
http://www.geocities.com/mmcfly8888/ That is needed to make the file system win 98 or ME will recognize |
Split up the partitions on your drive and install both OS's

Dude, X-Wing and TIE Fighter are DOS games. If that's all that's holding you back, just upgrade and use DOSBox to play those two games. Or get the updated versions (you can get them in a box set with X-Wing : Alliance) and you're off to the races.
Windows 98 implementation of USB is broken, only marginally better than the than the Win95 OSR 2 implementation (which barely worked). You're going to have a hard time getting it all to work smoothly that way. |
well. there's the cost of changing too. I have a 98 machine, and an xp, but i just got the xp under duress. I didn't want to pay just to get the new OS.
