popups with firefox.
All of a sudden I have been getting popups with firefox that is annoying the hell out of me. As far as I can tell nothing has changed with my preferences and I still have the 'block popup windows' box checked. Any idea why this could be happening?
I have firefox version 1.0.7. cheers, Daval

Can you download 1.5? It catches more popups than 1.0.x does. Also, there are things that look like popups, but aren't; those are a bit more complicated.
If you are waiting because your extenisons haven't been updated yet, there are ways around that. Post a list, I can let you know if any are broken.

I do get from a couple of sites, but that site is the worst offender.
How do I add to hosts?

Ah, those aren't popups, because popups are java-based, and those ads are flash-based overlays. Po-tay-to, po-tah-to, I know. The extension Adblock Plus can take care of that, as I understand it.

you can also try NoScript
It can be a bit of a pain in the ass until you get all the permissions allowed for the various sites you hit the most but I find it works rather well for me and I do not even have adblock installed.

I've tried adding to the 'warn me when web sites try to install extensions or themes' exceptions list. where else is there a whitelist located? I'm having no luck here.
I'm really not computer iliterate, but I'm sure feeling like it with this :P

Unable to begin installation. Software updates are disabled. Try Anyway? OK / Cancel I click OK and I get the message bar across the top that says- Software Installation is currently disabled. Click edit options...to enable it and try again. and then it gives me the options button that brings up the options menu

I think there's bandwith problems: that's a Corel Cache link.
Try http://www.extensionsmirror.nl/index.php?showtopic=774 , and scroll to the "quoted section" for the Plus version. Filterset G is also on that page.

Rather than installing, save the XPI file to your hard drive. Open the Extension Manager (tools - extensions). Drag the XPI file and drop it into the Extension Manager window. Does that do it?

Something is completely weird on your system. Let's start your profile over again. Find your profile folder, rename it, and start Firefox again. It'll create a new fresh profile. After closing Firefox, you can move some files back.
bookmarks.html, certainly hostperm.1 / key3.db / signons.txt for saved logins cookies.txt for cookies There are others that are semi-safe, but probably not worth the risk.

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm if a site ever offends you... just add it to the file from time to time I'll still get a popup sometimes, but it will be a blank page unable to hijack my browser. you manually edit the file in notepad just make sure you save it as hosts.sam not hosts.txt Edit: Did you check to see if something spyware/malware is hijacking firefox?

I tried out proxomitron and so far so good. I'm using the default config file for now, will upgrade that as I learn the program.
Thanks for all of your help guys. This has been great help and I've learned a lot more about firefox! Just wish I could get extensions to install

No, this is a known issue when upgrading to fox1.5. 1.5 drops the "allow websites to install extensions" options in the dialog, and retains your old settings. So if you had 'em disabled before, now they're disabled without a dialog to fix it. Type about:config in the address bar, and scroll down to xpinstall.enabled and toggle it from false to true. |

Good job all! It looks like you helped him out. I wanted to say I thought that was cool of you to do.
I clicked that link, the wrestling one, just so see how my ffox would handle it. Between Adblock w/filter set G, and Flashblock, that site kept nice and civil. Then I viewed it in IE just for giggles. That was truely funny. It makes me wonder: 1) When writing a page, how do people get to thinking all that's a good idea? Do they sit around and think "how can we annoy our viewers?" meh. 2) Who the heck uses IE? It's like saying "Sir can I have another?"
