DOS drivers for USB mouse?

Basically I'm asking if there's any hope for me. I recently downloaded the dosbox emulator for Win XP and am trying to play some DOS games on it but I can't get the mouse to work.

In my rudimentary investigations, I found it stated that a USB mouse could never be recognized by DOS mouse drivers. Is there a workaround or something I am missing?

If it makes a difference, I'm using a laptop. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Both my trackpad and my cordless USB mouse work in dosbox (at least with Oregon Trail and Where in the USA is Carmen Sandiego). I'm pretty sure that dosbox emulates all Windows devices in the DOS environment. I'd check to see if your mouse is registering in Windows.

Yeah, DOSBox should pick up the mouse and use a wrapper. If I had to pick a culprit I'd say your DOSBox install may be set up wrong.

My Logitech MX-500 USB mouse works fine with it. you're right that within DOS it's very difficult to get any USB peripherals to work (you'd have to script the chipset drivers yourself to allow the USB devices to interface and that's no walk in the park) but DOSBox is an emulator so that doesn't apply.

Also, from the readme :

A: Normally DOSBox detects the mouse being used by a game. If you click on
the screen then it should get locked (confined to the DOSBox window)
and work. Sometimes the DOSBox mouse detection doesn't work with certain
games. You might have to force to lock the mouse then with ctrl-F10.

Thanks folks. Since I am a huge impatient idiot, I figured that just because my mouse didn't work in the menu screen of the game I was playing (Worlds of Ultima - Savage Empire), that it wasn't working at all. Of course I tried again after reading your responses and found that once you get into the main interface there are no problems.

Thanks for putting up with me and I'm sorry....I'm sorry for everything. I'll go into exile now.

Well, a lot of older games did. The big one that comes to mind was the original Quake. You had to go into the console and do "+mlook" to activate it though. Have you really never played a game in DOS?

you should watch the sensitivity of the USB mice at work when we boot into Ghost. (to reload the O/S) .PS/2 works fine but USB works for every millimetre you move on the desk it moves 30 cm on screen.
