Program that details file size on Computer
 

Is there a free program that easily shows which files and folders are taking up the most space on your hard drive? My laptop is filling up and i have deleted all unnecessary programs but want to see which folders are taking up the most space.

You did'nt mention what OS you are running, but if it's Windows....

I use DIRUSE.EXE from the windows resource kit.

It can be dowloaded from MS for free at....

Screw that, SpaceMonger for the win. It's like diruse, with a full-blown GUI that shows everything. SpaceMonger rox my sox.

I like the DIRUSE because then I can script events to take place against the results. Command line ROX for me, but different folks have different needs.

Spacemonger is free, but I can't get my head around the 'block' graphics to show space.

I'm too used to graphs.

Treesize pro has an eval version if you need it for a few weeks.

Erm, windows explorer - it's free and you've probably already got it (if you are using windows)

Get it to do a search for files over a certain size, and then tell it to sort those files by size. Bingo, a complete list of everything on your PC, already ranked in order of what you might want to get rid of/archive first.

Single-file largeness is usually self-evident. The times I need assistance are when I've let a directory grow to unhealthy proportions. That's when graphical tools help. Sure, command-line tools and scripted alerts are mandatory to keep production boxes in order, but workstations often grow fungus files _because_ they're outside of a managed environment.

I always liked treesize (mentioned above). The free version does enough for most people.

Well put Cyrnel, but I still love me blocky little SpaceMonger. It's a good tool to have when diagnosing TMP syndrome :)

Once you get the graphics on Spacemonger figured out, it's the best for seeing what is taking up the most space

An excellent graphical program for Windows is Sequoia

Shows you the whole drive, with blocks based on size for different files, as well as information on directories, the space taken up by different types of files, etc.

Try it out.

I also use Sequoia View... i like the way it shows you the distrubution.
