Monitor problem (21" Trinitron)
I was sitting at the computer, when the picture suddenly went funky - the screen 'dropped' about half-way, reso enlarged, and the picture was no longer flat, it was stretched/curved towards me at the bottom.
(still doing it, it's not a windows problem, it does it after reboot pre os-load). it has been hot in here the past few days, and it was turned on all day (~30 degrees celcius in the apartment). it's turned off now, i turned it off immediately and tried once, during a reboot, about an hour later. i've tried a bit of googling, not finding anything *yet*, still looking though. I guess I'm just in a panic more than anything, as I love that monitor and hope she's not dead :( anyone ever seen/heard of what i describe? need more info? (ps) I notised the picture was 'shaky' the past week or so, a degauss did not fix it ... but that could also just be an electrical problem, as the bf's monitor (a tft) has been doing the same, and we have a LOT of electricity in this living room, a few computers and stuff, and we know our wiring is kinda messed up too. not sure if the shaking was a sign it was going to die, or not. |
Sounds like you may have lost a component but keep trying.
Does it behave the same way connected to another computer? No refrigerator magnets nearby, right? :) Is your power okay? Your mention of your bf's monitor says you have interference or a power problem. Try plugging it into another circuit. (not just another outlet) You may have something on the line that's interfering. (refrigerator, air conditioner, etc.) Before giving up, physically move it elsewhere with a different orientation and make sure the problem remains. CRT's are very sensitive to magnetic fields. |
I'm guessing the horzontal or high voltage circuits have a problem.
These circuits work the hardest. The hot weather may have helped cause the problem. Did the 'air holes' get covered by a magazine or something. Big no-no. You did good to turn off the monitor. Do not run it unattended or more damage may result. At this point, I would suppect the Horz. output device or Vert. output device. They may be a transistor or an IC. Or you could be lucky. |
A Trinitron eh? How old is this Sony monitor? If the label doesn't say Sony you can be sure it is. My last 19" flat screen only lasted 2 years. Contact their repair shop but it sounds like yours has kicked the bucket. Shaky pic is most likely from the transformer going bad. Now your bf's monitor is doing the same? Get a few surge protectors, divide the circuit loads. I hope you have at least two separate breakers for the outlets in the room.

thanks for the replies, guys.
sorry i'm only just now getting back to the thread. since it was doing the same thing the next day, i just decided to assume she's dead :( didn't try her on other computers - monitor's not exactly portable, and I spend too much time already hauling computers around ... didn't block any air holes ... but never vaccuumed them either? maybe there's dust in there i'm unaware of. she's old enough, i suppose - manufacture date on the back is March, 1998! so anyways, I found a replacement on ebay. the trinitron technically belongs to the bf, i was just using it ... and if things break while I use them, i replace them. (won't be using the new one though, don't want to buy yet another!) thx for the helps :) |
Sorry to hear it.
I currently use the 21" Trinitron and my god, is it big. I hear you on the portability thing. I had to reinforce my compuer desk to hold it! |
heh, indeed.
i've started preliminary planning on my new computer setup (moving in August) ... and i plan on buying myself a 21" trinitron, seriously these things are the gods of crt's ;) and it's going to be a challenge to find (make?) a desk that will accomodate it. |
I'd seriously try with a laptop or other PC first.
1: They're a damned pain to move. Literally. 2: Shipping fees from ebay!!!!! 3: it's cheaper to buy a new gfx card than a monitor. Try moving the video cable to the top of the desk when you do it and away from any other power supplies. Does it have the auto set button on the front. Tried that? |
1. I don't need to worry about moving this one. (I'll be moving away from it).
2. monitor + shipping was 82 euro. not bad, really. 3. my puter instincts are 99% sure it's the monitor, not the gfx card. it's done, new (used) one is on the way, if the bf wants to fuck around with the old one before disposing of it, he's more than welcome to do so. :) |
repair shop can usually fix thing like that from $50-$100 USD from my experience. Better than $300-$400 USD and up for new.
|
le sigh ...
1. the new used one is already on the way. 82 euro = 100 usd right now. 2. i am 200% certain that repair shops in middle-of-nowhere-south-of-germany are going to be fuck-me-in-the-ass expensive. |
Someone gave me a Hitachi CM802E. I think it is 21 inch.
I replaced a 32 Euro vertical output IC and the monitor is working fine for almost three years now. Monitor was made in late 90's. Some monitors are worth fixing. |
