Can I burn a DVD from a USB enclosure?

I bought a USB enclosure for my dvd burner (LG 4x +/-) so I would be able to use it on my iBook and PC. Neither seem to be able to burn DVD's (that is to say movies). I've tried using Toast and iDVD on the Mac, and Nero and DVD Shrink on the PC. No luck. I'm wondering if it's just a hardware incompatibilityl; that I'd need a FireWire enclosure to do this. What's the deal?

That doesn't make any sense. That doesn't mean it's not true; just that it doesn't make sense.

Can you burn movies when it's installed in your PC? Have you tried burning a movie that you know works?

You may need specific drivers for the USB enclosure. Make sure your USB drivers are updated, then check with the manufacturer of the enclosure.

Oh... is it USB 2.0? Or 1.x? I can't remember the speeds each are off-hand, but now that I think of it, 1.x probably wouldn't be a sufficient speed to burn a DVD. Check the bitrate to burn a DVD then compare it to the transfer speed of a USB cable. That might be the problem. Disregard the comment about that not making sense.

I used this burner in my pc for a good 7 months to burn movies and such. The enclosure I got ,a NexStar 2, didn't really come with any drivers. It''s a USB 2.0 device, and I'm trying to use it on USB 2.0 ports. A friend of mine has a firewire dvd writer and that works fine for him. I bought usb because it was a little cheaper. Firewire transfers at 400 bps and usb 2.0 is 480, so says my enclosure's box.

When you say USB drivers, did you mean for the device, or for my motherboard? The mac wouldn't have that issue.

I've got no experiece with the PC side of your problem, but does your iBook recognize the drive when it's plugged in? I'm assuming your running OS X. Plug in and turn on your DVD drive and go to your System Profiler (Apple Menu-About this Mac-More Info. Look under Hardware for the USB listing, everything that's plugged in via USB should show up. The drive might not be supported on the Mac, the System Profiler should tell you if it is or not. If not, go to www.patchburn.de and download their app. It's shareware but you don't have to pay to use it (although I suggest you do, it's an amazing little app). I replaced the CD-RW in my G4 with an unsupported Sony Combo drive and patchburn got everything working like a charm.

Thanks for recommending patchburn. I'm trying to burn my files in toast right now. I
ve gotten farther now than I have before. But still, why does my pc not work with it?

Does anyone here have a USB 2.0 DVD writer?

Edit: It now will burn in Toast on the Mac, but not in iDVD.

So I ended up putting it back into my pc to use dvd shrink, but now I need it hooked up to multiple computers.

This is an LG 4x+/- burner in an enclosure, usb2.0 device on 2.0 built in port. I'm trying to use Nero and DVD Shrink. When I try to burn, it fails. The drive works fine when it is internal.

My friend told me something about usb speeds being limited on some motherboards to 128, but I dont have any options like that in my bios.

Any suggestions?

I've done the reverse with no issues on PC. I have a USB HD enclosure with a Western Ditigal 200GB HD and I use DVDShrink and store the iso it creates in the USB HD. Then I burn (using internal DVD writer) the DVD using "Burn Image to Disc" and select the file on the USB HD.

So, speed shouldnt be the issue. Could it just be a crap DVD writer? Personally, I've only had Memorex and Sony DVD writers and had no issues with either.

IMHO i'd look into stuff about that LG drive and see if anyone else has had problems turning it into an external drive ... perhaps on their forums? Might be getting a bit pissy...

Wish I could help more! Funny, as I was planning to do something similar to this, yet with some older CDRW/HDD's.
