PC go BOOM!

I built myself a new computer last week. Everything went good... no issues. I was pretty happy with the system. A few days ago, I plugged in my digital camera into one of the USB ports, and immediately, the system shut down. I tried repowering it, but nothing... the drives spin, and the power supply comes on, but no POST, no Video, no beeps, nothing.

So, any ideas what might have died? Mobo? Proc? Both?

Help!!

I have no idea, that's very strange. Try unplugging everything except the CPU, Vid card, and hard drive. Then see if it will boot. Was the USB port up front? Maybe the connector was in the wrong spot? I don't know how you could do that, though.

While that is weird.., Sometimes my computer randomly reboots itself when I plug in a front USB. Always reboots fine, though.

I've taken everything out, one thing at a time, and still no luck. I've even gone as far as taking out the vidcard and harddrives, and not even a beep from the system. The USB connector was in the front, but I and several other friends checked, and it was plugged in according to the manual.

My new motherboard came in tonight, so I'm going to go ahead and replace it, and pray that its not the CPU. (ASUS is being a pain in the ass as far as RMAs are concerned).

Will let you all know what it turns out to be.

Yeah, man let us know. I've never heard of a USB port completly killing a system like that. I've had no more than two reboots when connecting to a USB device since I built my box. Wierd.

Well... I'm writing now from my "rebuilt" PC. Everything seems to be working fine, though I'm a bit reluctant to plug anything into the front USB.

I'm going to ship this old motherboard to ASUS and see if they can figure it out. Guess I'll find out in about a month. At least I'll have the start of my "gaming" system.

Although it probably has nothing to do with this issue... I've seen the results of a plug being inserted in the wrong hole. Someone managed to plug an internal firewire port into an internal USB port (or the other way around; can't remember)... the result: the motherboard actually started *burning*. When I saw it, it had a (2 inch) hole in it, where the mainboard had completely burned away. :O
