How would I do this? Routing question...

My school is using a system that makes it so that you have to login to a webpage before you are able to use the internet. How would I create a system so when someone new connects to my router it takes them to a page that I desire and they are not able to surf unless they go through that page. To be more specific I want to limit them to only be able to sure if they have a certian page up on their comp. Like a top banner frame, that they must have up in order to use the internet. How do I do this and what would it be called? I would have done the research on my own but I have no clue to what you could call something like this. Thanks.

don't know myselfy, but sounds like you would need a proxy, which would wrap the viewed pages with the frame you want.

SQUID proxy running on a linux box. preferably debian.

Squid is...

* a full-featured Web proxy cache
* designed to run on Unix systems
* free, open-source software
* the result of many contributions by unpaid (and paid) volunteers

Squid supports...

* proxying and caching of HTTP, FTP, and other URLs
* proxying for SSL
* cache hierarchies
* ICP, HTCP, CARP, Cache Digests
* transparent caching
* WCCP (Squid v2.3 and above)
* extensive access controls
* HTTP server acceleration
* SNMP
* caching of DNS lookups

is there a windows proxy system that I could use? I'm trying to avoid to avoid having to build a new linux system.

Sounds like what you want is a "captive portal". I run one and use NoCat which is great (but linux-based).

Google reveals a few messages which suggest you'll need Linux if you want it for free.

But these guys appear to have a solution if you'll pay for it...

Thanks, that gives me a little more to go by.
