What's a good compact digital camera?

I'm looking for a good quality pocket size digital camera. Any advise out there?

What's the price range?
What do you plan on using this camera for?
Do you plan on printing pictures? If so, how large?

We'll work from there, I guess.

I highly recommend the Casio Exilim. It's about and inch thick and I carry it in my pocket alot. Almost too much. I have to remember sometimes that I have it and not to put it in the laundry!!!

Linky: http://www.exilim.casio.com/

Mine is a EX-Z4U, I bought it about 6 months ago. Right before the newer models came out. I paid about $329 at Radio Shack. Great camera.

I recommend the Exilim series too. Very compact and stylish, with optical zoom and a super-sized LCD screen. Also, go to a local store and take a look at and feel the different models -- you will see which one you really like.

One thing to watch out for when buying a digital camera is the time it takes the flash to recharge...From the time I take a picture with a flash until I am able to take another picture again (with the flash) is about 7 seconds. I own a Nikon Coolpix camera.

Right now, I'd say the Nikon Coolpix 5200 is topdog in the compacts. The screen ain't huge, but it's nice. The camera is very responsive, easy to use, and the image quality is great. Check around, as sites like NewEgg or Dell sometimes have great deals on them.

in my opinion, the best compact digital cameras are the canon ixus models...
the 5.0mp and above.

i've noticed that sony digi cams are terrible and hav too much noise even with 3~5mp's.
i own an old model of olympus Dzoom 2.1mp. (bought it in '98)
when compared with new digital cameras, my olympus is substantially better, picture quality-wise.

Something from Nikon. I like my Coolpix 2100, but am looking for its replacement. Would like a 4-5MP camera. Will look at either Nikon most likely. Easy to use, advanced settings if you want them, and superb image quality.

The 5200 would fit the bill unless you're set on manual settings. If you want manual camera operation, you're looking at the 5400, 5700, 8400, 8700, or 8800. None of them are very compact, however.

lol yet another "I recommend whatever object I own" thread.
In the end the thread starter doesnt know who to listen to...
I think all last gen cameras are good, I mean the 2.5 Mega pixels should be enough for everyone..

At least the thread starter should be further then where he was in the beginning. It's not like it's a "Tell me what I should buy" but more a "what have you had good luck with, and why?" thread.

yup, I know, but it is funny everyone does say what they got and not what they wish they had...
however....tell us what you want, price range? megapixels? flash recharge? battery consumption? ergonomy?

My suggestion didn't come from something I own. I work with these things, and I recommend what I see works best, and what most people walk away happy with at the end of the day.

Just to clarify my stance. (heck, I don't even own a digicam right now)

I own a canon powershot s400.

Here's what matters.
Size... if you won't bring it with you, it won't take pictures. My camera is so small it fits in my pocket. It's also rugged metal so I cram it in my pant pocket with my keys and it's just fine.

Optical Zoom: get at least a 3x zoom so you don't have to keep running back and forth.

refresh time. some cameras are really slow between pictures. Find a website that compares the time between shots. Both during the day and at night with flash.

Ease of use. Try to see if you can figure the camera out on your own. If you can't, don't buy it.

Quality and size of display screen. The latest Sony mini camera is kick ass. My friend has one.
