SuprNova closed for good...

From the SuprNova site:

Greetings everybody,

As you have probably noticed, we have often had downtimes. This was because it was so hard to keep this site up!
But now we are sorry to inform you all, that SuprNova is closing down for good in the way that we all know it.
We do not know if SuprNova is going to return, but it is certainly not going to be hosting any more torrent links.
We are very sorry for this, but there was no other way, we have tried everything.

Thank you all that helped us, by donating mirrors or something else, by uploading and seeding files, by helping people out on IRC and on forum, by spreading the word about SuprNova.org.
It is a sad day for all of us!

Please visit SuprNova.org every once in a while to get the latest news on what is happening and if there is anything new to report on.

As we wish to maintain the nice comunity that we created, we are keppig forums and irc servers open.

Thank you all and Goodbye!
sloncek & the rest of the SuprNova Team

End of an era... I can only speculate that this is because of the recent moves by the **AA against similar torrent sharing sites. Guess its back to the good old torrentspy... Any other similar sites?

shadowalker 12-19-2004 11:11 AM

In the BT thread i gave it a week befor the MPAA/RIAA shut them down, and it seems like its done now.

Ultimate_Gohan 12-19-2004 02:50 PM

One of the best site's is gone. Like me and everyone else, I have to go somewhere else but that was the best bittorrent site. Im depressed.

scott_p_1 12-19-2004 02:59 PM

Yeah, it's very unfortunate that Suprnova died. Punktorrents is also on haitus for now (unsure of when it will re-open). Thank god my beloved Indietorrents is still alive and kicking!

laconic1 12-19-2004 03:36 PM

Torrentbits.org shut down when I was a mere 15 megabytes away from completing a 4.2 gigabyte download.

westothemax 12-19-2004 04:10 PM

Give this a shot:

Google search for something, but add on filetype:torrent

For example. I tried Googling "lebowski filetype:torrent" and I came up with a page of torrents for The Big Lebowski DiVX rip. I need to install a client before I can see if the results from Google are any good.

debianuser 12-19-2004 07:42 PM

As my favorite animated internet cartoon character would say:

"NOOOOOO!!!!....ALI....ALI's SISTER!!!"
~Strongbad

but seriously though, I was one of the many who downloaded legal torrents from that site. It was the only place i could find the english version of Knoppix 7.3 (linux iso)

ChrisJericho 12-19-2004 09:44 PM

Why God !? WHYYYYYYYYYY

mattevil 12-19-2004 10:32 PM

man and i just got back from college where it was blocked.

punx1325 12-19-2004 11:08 PM

so what is there to use now?

bendsley 12-20-2004 06:39 AM

torrentbits.org has been closed as well, but may be opened under another domain name. try http://www.cyphersworld.com/

Bit torrent websites are doomed. The trackers they offer make them nice, fat targets for the MPAA/RIAA and they're potential single pionts of failure due to hardware and/or bandwidth issues. Can P2P survive? Only if it evolves.

Some Background:
Here's a quick n' dirty BitTorrent operational description. The bittorrent file download and distribution concepts take some understanding. You'll find terms like "seeds" and "trackers" with lengthy descriptions but to simplify things, all you need to understand here is that a single seed file (complete file) is needed to start the process. Once enough users connect and start downloading the file, additional users can begin to get pieces of the file from eachother. Bits of the file that one user has already downloaded become available to other users. The tracker receives information from all downloaders and gives them random lists of peers (other downloaders) to draw from. In essence, you could download a complete file from other downloaders and never once get any data directly from the original seed file. This means that the original seed file source location never gets swamped. Even better, the more people downloading that file actually increases your download speed since you'll have more sources to draw from.

The problem:
All the info you need to have your bittorrent application connect to a tracker and start downloading is stored in a tiny text file with a ".torrent" extension. The problem is, where do you get these .torrent files? There are a few websites that have created elaborate systems to offer the .torrent files but to display how many seeds and users are currently connected to that "torrent". Today, one of the largest of these sites, suprnova.org receives so much traffic that it has become a bottleneck in the system. Even worse, the dependancy on a website to get torrents has become a single point of failure.

The Solution:
What's needed is a program that decentralizes the way we find and distribute torrent and tracker data. The idea is to remove the single point of failure by having each person running the application share torrent and tracker data with eachother in almost the same way file data from a torrent download is shared with all users.

Suprnova.org's vision of the future is called eXeem. It's an application that promises to change the face of p2p file distribution by encorporating bittorrent technology in a way that solves the problems listed above. The beta version of eXeem is running at version .15 and is only accessible to 5,000 beta testers. There is currently no date set for a public release.

the_marq 12-20-2004 07:00 AM

Oh well, it's not like BT is dead. There are still tons and tons of available sites to get the trackers from. This won't slow me down at all.

zero2 12-20-2004 10:11 AM

Suprnova was the best, I just can't help to think what chance other similar sites have of making it.

The only loop hole, is if the site is hosted in Europe, but even that doesn't mean much, since earlier this week a Finnish forum site was busted, along with users who were signed up.

Could this be the end of Bittorrent?

I'm not sure. Indietorrents has been down since last night with absolutely no word. Last thing I read about it was when the owner said "Indietorrents would shut down when hell freezes over" (or something to that effect). I'm hoping it's just an unnerving coincidence. They don't really have a reason to be shut down since they don't allow any RIAA material to be posted.

You haven't heard anything, have you? (I'll freak out if I lose indietorrents!!!)

edit: It seems to be kind of back up. I think they're just having some server troubles.

blar 12-20-2004 08:17 PM

NOOO now where can i go to dl episodes of shows i miss :(

shadowalker 12-20-2004 08:19 PM

But i'm glad I joined a non public tracker site that is limited to 30K people. Have to go check it now and see what's new.

cyrnel 12-20-2004 09:00 PM

Lots of alternatives, even some supr mirrors. They'll bob & weave as necessary. Stick to your IRC for news & meanwhile google filetype:torrent.

bing bing 12-20-2004 09:04 PM

Man, that really sucks.

duck0987 12-20-2004 10:23 PM

If you are looking for torrents, http://torrentreactor.net/ is still up and running, enjoy....

welshbyte 12-21-2004 06:48 AM

Blimey, i haven't even started using BT and its already getting rudely pummelled into the ground by corporate paranoia. They call this freedom?! What is the world coming to?!

Viros 12-21-2004 07:45 AM

This really sucks I used suprnova to track down old tv shows that I missed : (

Destrox 12-21-2004 09:32 AM

I'd say I am sad, but I am not.

Public warez shouldnt exist.

thank you Yogi....thank you for not posting how you broke in at the very least and linking to really nasty sites! In addition awesome grammer!

yeah, fucking blackhat hackers....watch out for the links btw
it's goatce.cx. Also links to RIAA website and MPAA website
(on that whole topic I would like to say this...they have a point, but they are also greedy bastards, and they do not speak for every artist/movie maker as they seem to claim)
