play MPGs on CD on DVD?
 

Maybe my DVD player doesn't support it but I've got a few .MPG, .MPEG, .WMV, and .ASF files on my PC. What format do I need to use to burn these onto a CD and play them on my DVD player to watch on the big screen?

Yeah, the thing is, your DVD player has to have the capability to decode whatever format you're trying to play. You may want to check the manufacturer's website, or here to see what your model is capable of. Hope this helps.

toilet_duck is correct, different players have different capabilities. One thing to look for when you are researching this is any mention of "VCD". VCD is the most common format (outside of actual DVDs, of course) that many players can display properly. And a VCD is merely a mpeg or mpg file (of the mpeg-1 variety, the most common type found on the 'net) of a particular size and other properties, burned onto a CD in a particular way.

If you find that your player supports the VCD format, go here (same site toilet_duck linked to, just the front page) for many tutorials and links to free software that can convert your videos into the correct format and burn them onto CDs.

Of course if you find that your DVD player supports formats like wmv or divx avi or anything like that, conversion of those will not be necessary and you may be able to simply burn those directly to a CD.

You can use Nero or many other tools to convert your file to VCD/SVCD to enable viewing on your TV via your DVD player.

If you want to throw them all in to one dvd (or vcd) Ulead DVD workshop 2 support all of those formats I believe. It will convert it to proper dvd format (vob files with the video_ts folder) with out you doing it manually for each video.
