AGP or PCI-e???

hello

i am planning on upgrading my comp but i can decide if i should go the pci route or stay agp

i plan on getting a amd64 chip and if i go pci i would go for a 6600gt or x700 pci video card

but the reason why i am thinking of pci-e is because i am guessing its going to be the mainstream thing in a year or so.

any help or suggestions?

thx

I personally, for now, would still go AGP...Still great performance, and a lot cheaper. :)

Yeah go PCI-E. There really isn't much of a difference right now but AGP is going to be phased out in favor of PCI-E. You'll be able to upgrade your video card after AGP is gone.

AGP will not be gone for a LONG time. Just think how long it has taken to get rid of PCI video cards, and I know you can still find one or two at fry's if you really wanted one.

You can still buy PCI cards at Wal-Mart & Circuit City.

If you are planning on a continuous upgrade cycle (new cpu, new video, new HD) every few months, might as well go pci-e now to save the headache later. If, however, you intend to let the computer configuration sit static for a while (8-10 months or more) stick with AGP for the reasons mentioned by JeremeyS.

it'll be phased out withen the next 5 years or so so....if you plan on upgrading the computer after 5 or so years it'll be more expensive (new mobo etc) or course you'll probably need to do that anyway considering how fast new technology comes.

Last time I knew, there were not any AMD motherboards with pci-e. Anyone know if this is still the case?

Funny, I was thinking the same thing.. I don't think it's been implemented yet. (Still!!!)

jonjon42 10-10-2004 06:39 PM

I think it should be implemented in the next 2 weeks actually when the new nforce chipsets come out..

Lasereth 10-11-2004 06:57 AM

Buying an AGP motherboard would not be a bad idea right now. Even the PCI-E cards out right now have AGP versions. The X700 and 6600 series are gonna have AGP counterparts as well. Another factor is the point that PCI-E currently has *no* advantage over AGP concerning videocards. Performance is 1% better at most.

If you want to wait for the AMD motherboards to come out with PCI-E, go ahead, but I'd personally still go for AGP since it's gonna be a damn long time before it's obsolete.

thanks for the replys

for those who were wondering if there are any AMD pci-e boards i believe the nforce4 is coming out next week or the later half of this month

lasereth i heard about the agp version of 6600 but do you know when it is coming out? i hope soon but i have not heard any news about the AGP version.

Same here. Tom's and Anand all have the release date as "soon." I'll certainly be looking for a release date and will post one in my videocard buyer's guide ASAP!

ok thx

i guess it would be more cheaper to go the agp route if i get the 6600 gt rather then a 6800gt lol

what price do you think the noforce 4 pci boards will be

jonjon42 10-13-2004 01:45 PM

at first super expensive..then falls with less demand..and then it rises again due to scarcity.
gotta love the price cycle for computer parts...

rhapz 10-13-2004 02:10 PM

Go agp, agp will be in the market for a while and therefore there is no need to get a pci-e that is more expensive just for the "upgrade value"

blar 10-13-2004 03:27 PM

yea i would go agp if the 6600gt ver comes out soon.........hopefully this year

i just need a good but main stream video card thats cheap and the 6600gt seems to fit that

NavySEAL 10-13-2004 03:35 PM

PCI-E if your building a new comp and if you've already got AGP 8x, there is no need to upgrade yet because we still don't need all that bandwidth.

i don't have a 8x card and i do plan on upgrading to a basically new comp

terkz 10-14-2004 11:16 PM

PCI-E would be better .
