My computer will not keep time or date any more!
 

:confused: Can anyone help me out with this problem?

It is a fairly new Dell computer. Probably around 1&1/2 yrs. old.

I come in every day and it is still on the day before along with some random time it just picks.

Am I wrong guessing that the battery in the computer is dead? I keep it plugged in overnight, but I do a Shut Down at the end of the day.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

I would agree that the battery is dead.

Dead battery.

The PC should have come witha diagnostics CD. Run that.

While I agree the battery could be dead, it my be the system clock crystal.

We have 500+ Dells here where I work and the was a good batch of them lately that were losing time. I ran the diagnostics and it turned out to be the clock crystal. The bad thing is you need to replace the mobo, but, if it's under warranty, you're good. They are very easy to replace.

If you don't have the CD, look on Dell's website, you should be able to download it. Their site is pretty easy to navigate. It should even be able to tell you if the battery is dead.

I don't know about a dead battery...my girlfriend's family's Dell never kept the time correctly until we formatted it. After the format and reinstallation of Windows, it was fine! It still keeps time correctly. A format wouldn't fix a dead battery, so it's obviously something weird in Windows. It could be a dead battery, but I wouldn't put all your money on it yet. Have you tried changing the time in BIOS manually?

I'd do a Google search of the problem. If a format fixes it, then it's obviously a software-based issue in some cases.

A battery is maybe $5? Go get one and see, if it doesn't work, take it back. I know for sure Best Buy will take it back within 30 days, used or not.

If your bettery were dead, your BIOS settings would reset to their defaults everytime the system was turned off.

I don't think its the CMOS battery...

Your battery doesn't just die anyways, it's dying maybe...
It's the same battery I believe anyways.
