What is codec ?
So many video's I dowload give me codec error and won't play.
Please help. |
I don't know,but when You know,You should share,and find us a version that doesn't include Gain.
|
It's a coder-decoder.
A nice place to start is with terabit's AVI info program. DivX digest (no, it's not a porn site) has an info page and a link tio the download. After you find out which codec you need, you'll have a better chance at finding the right one. |
In this instance, codec is short for compressor/decompressor. The videos you have are in a compressed format so you need the correct codec to decompress it and allow you to view it.

I downloaded Divx, and it fixed almost all my same problems

If you're having problems playing files, try out this player: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
It's called VLC and it plays files that I could never get to work before. |
I find myself downloading a different codec for nearly every AVI file I try to view. Windows Media Player is useless when it comes to giving a meaningful error message. RealPlayer usually tells me exactly what codec I need for the file I'm trying to play. Then I simply google up the codec name, download it, install it, and I'm viewing my file in a matter of minutes. So my advice is: if you can't figure out what codec you need, try opening the file in RealPlayer.
Note that once you download a codec for a given media player, it typically will work with all of your other media players as well. |
The best way to find out what codec you need to ind and dowload is by using a program called gspot http://gspot.headbands.com this program will tell you what codecs you need to watch a specific video.
|
My suggestion is to not have realplayer on your machine at all and follow heyal's suggestion.
|
the most comprehensive codec pack i've ever used is the klite codec pack. just google it, it will support almost anything.
|
speaking of codecs... Ive been noticing that the last few divx's Ive downloaded have played extremely choppy. Do you think that this is because my codecs are out of date or just that my computer was running slow?

http://www.free-codecs.com/ best site Ive found for codecs. Has klite pack and a realplayer codec. You can watch rm files with out realplayer yay
|
i linked to the K-Lite codec in another post on codecs just a bit ago, so i support that as well. comes with any codec you're likely going to ever need.
i think there's a pack that includes Gspot in case you need it. Windows Media Player Classic is where it's at. smallest proggie you'll ever find. no mess at all, uses considerably less system resources. |
