Need a *very* easy to use Image editor

I'm looking for a very easy to use image manipulator for my mum. She is not very good using computers. She can use it to do a few things if she writes down the steps involved.

She has a digital camera, and can transfer the photos to the hard drive, and browse through them.

However, to do anything with them, she needs me to do it for her, and I don't want to teach her how to use photoshop; it's too complicated.

So any reccomendations? The package only needs a minimum of functionality:

Resize, Rotate and Crop.
Compress for email

Print:
It would be nice to be able to get see the image in relation to the page, and move it around and resize it. The ability to print more than one image on a page would also be nice.

Would be nice to have the ability to add captions, but thats not really important.

Again, ease of use is the top priority: A "Wizard" style interface would be ideal.

Preferrably the software should be free, or at least have a 30-day demo available.

I have heard that IrfanView is good. Anyone vouch for it?

Thanks.

that is an excellent choice for these criteria listed
---
Resize, Rotate and Crop.
Compress for email
---

the 'file save quality' option for JPGs (pictures) below with 0-100 range and 0-9 compression for PNGs coupled with the easy to use resize/crop (ctrl+y)/rotate/etc options make it ideal for users of all skills levels

for basic editing Irfanview > *. It is unparalelled IMO. It supports 8bf plugins and has it's own set. It saves in like 30 formats and opens just about any image.

IrfanView is very likely the best way to go. For basic editing, I've never seen anything better. It's very fast and pretty easy to use. And best of all, it's freeware!

edit: I've never tried putting more than one image on a page, but there's a preview and you can resize it however you want. If you want to position it you have to know how far from the borders you want the image to be (but there's a preview) or you can just choose "center image."

This is a great program!

I was looking for a way to batch reduce photo sizes and comperess them while I was at it, this is teh r0xr.

It just did 2 folders of 1MB+ pics, no resize, and they're all reanamed to the dest folder of my choice, about 300K and bang, it only took 1 minute from telling it what pics to done.

Small proggy, nice interface, took me 29 seconds to customize how I wanted it to batch reduce a FOLDER of pics, ran it BAM worked exaxtly like I'd thought it would.

Thanks for the reccommendation.

Google's Picasa should also be mentioned. It's very easy to use, and looks great (kind of...)

picasa.google.com

[edit] It's free too

I'd like to second the vote for Picasa - basic editing functions, automatic scanning of your hard drive, integration with gmail, and it's free.

Great program for any photographer

I'll third the picasa suggestion, and add that in addition to basic it can do some pretty daggone advanced editting as well. White balance, red-eye, hue, saturation.

I also want to add "Microsoft Picture and Fax Viewer" for viewing and rotating, and this for resizing photos. When installed, it provides "right-click on a photo or directory" functionality to quickly resize selected photos for emailing. Quick and easy.

I like and use Infanview and Picassa. Easy for most of us and for most of us amateurs, these will fix any basic problems.

I also found another Freeware called "PhotoFiltre". It's easy to find your pics, got some nice contrast and gamma buttons and some of the options are pretty cool...like blur, ripple, frames (in different colours and styles) and lots more you can easily fool around with. Check it out. I don't have a link at the moment but I am sure you can easily find it in whatever search engine you like.

I've downloaded and have been using a program called photofiltre. It is completely free, and has nice basic functionality. I use it primarily now.

Google should be able to find it in a couple of minutes.
