Windows ME hell please help

I Have been working with Win Me. for Two freaking years freeze ups, crashs galore, etc, etc.I know I have to get another operating sys.any thing but Win Me but at the present time being retired an all cash is a bit tight.Any advice to improve performance will be gladly accepted. My main problem right now is getting the op sys to see an external 80 gig acom hard drive which was loaned to me so a friend of mine can download some of my music files to burn for me.
I tried to add new hardware the regular plug and play from control panel it could not find the drivers needed .I went to acom web site got the right driver sys won' see it .Went device manager deleted and tried to reinstall no luck.
If there is a computer God out there who will take pity on me and offer any ideas I will forever be in your debt a thing I do not take lightly. Thanks Kelly53

*Standard piracy is bad boilerplate* That being said, I think this is one of the few instances where pirating a copy of 2k or XP would be fine.

Upgrade to win2k...i'm sure you can find a copy on pricewatch for a decent price, otherwise just get an xp home upgrade which is only $100 which is cheap to be legal.

Ill echo the other two responses. Like you said, ME is hell. Bite the bullet and upgrade. I dont want to sound like an ass, but ME really just sucks, hard. :(

There should be a class action suit against MS for releaseing winME. Man it was bad. I like XP but ME was weak, I think I gave up on it after a month.

If I were you I'd go back to Win98.

Yu can get Windows Server 2003 for free as a 6 month fully functional trial. As long as you have a decent system (at least 500Mhz, 256 RAM) it'll run just fine for you. Gives you six months free and legal if nothing else. I used it on an HP 800Mhz with 256 and it ran quite nicely. It's just a tad slower than win2k but the features and stability are the best ever.
