9800 SE Question

Greetings All,
I have a question to you graphics card gurus: I have heard a rumor (?) that you can mod (through software) a 9800 SE to a regular 9800 PRO. There is a way to unlock all 8 of the pipelines instead of the 4 of an SE. Is this true? Just wondering. Thanks

Whoa!
Where did you hear that from?

I suspect that wouldn't be true. The SE has only 4 pipes and is much lower priced, I'd be very surprised if you can actually add pipes to the hardware via software. It just doesn't make sense.

If you're looking for something that is dollar efficient, get the 9600XT. It's very cheap for its performance. Byt if you have the cash you can think about the GeForce FX 5900XT - it's a bit more expensive but faster than 9600XT.
Of course 9800Pro would be good, but you can only sell one kidney for cash; you need at least one.

The 9600XT is only marginally cheaper than the 9800 Pro I'd go for a 9800 Pro (specifically, the Sapphire brand from newegg.com). It's around $212 the last time I checked. A phenomenal deal. The 9800 Pro will run dogshit around the 9600XT.

I heard rumors about being able to mod the 9800se to 9800 Pro, but I don't think I ever read any testimonials of people who had accomplished the feat. Keep in mind that not only are half the pipelines locked in the SE, the memory interface is only 128 bits and poor quality ram modules are used.

This is much different from the 9800 non-pro to 9800 Pro mod which is simply a change of the card's bios (which I did).

Like others have said, I would just recommend getting he Sapphire 9800 pro from newegg, it's an awesome deal.

Got the details on this?

I read some stuff when I first got my card, but didn't do it for some reason (think I needed a particular kind of memory). If you were successful, I'd sure appreciate the details and your card's specs.

I assume you're quoting US$ when you said the 9800Se was $212? For around that price you may as well get the GeForce FX 5900XT.
It all depends on budget. For less money get the Radeon 9600XT, for slightly more money get GeForce 5900XT.
The 9800SE isn't a bad card, it just isn't in the "sweet-spot" in terms of price-performance ration.

You need to solder on jumper wires. Don't do it, you'll fry your card.

This is completely true, you can get the Omega drivers and softmod your 9800SE to XT.

However, it's not guaranteed to work. It's your call.

He said the 9800 Pro was $200, not the SE. The Sapphire 9800 Pro is still at NewEgg for right over $200. That price can't be beat.

A careful re-read will show that I said 9800 Pro, not the trash-of-all-videocards 9800SE
