What is the fan speed of the default Intel CPU fans
Simple Question
What is the fan speed of the default Intel CPU fans? I just got a new 2.8Ghz P4, but when I stress the CPU its quickly gets to the high 50s. So I installed some monitoring software. It reports that the CPU fan is going at 2600rpm but recommends at least 3000rpm. so is my fan going too slow. Thanks for any help

3000 RPM is moderately fast. I'm not sure of the default RPM on Intel fans, but to tell you the truth, it doesn't really matter. If your processor is running in the high 50s on idle, then the fan needs to be cranked up a little bit
.....2800 is low 2800-3800 is medium 3800+ is high That's an approximation. My CPU fan on my Barton 2500+ is running at like 3300 RPM. CPU runs at a constant 40 C in idle, 45 C on a load.

To answer your question, I wouldn't say it's going TOO slow. If you are not OCing or constantly badgering your computer with games and heavy programs, then you should be ok. But if you use your machine a lot I would try to set the fan up a bit higher (by any means possible).

but it gets to 55 when i do a spyware scan, im too scared to run any games.
also, how would i go about speeding the fan up. is there a setting i can change somewhere. ive got a gigabyte GA-8ik1100 motherboard I suppose the thing is that the cpu is sitting at 42-43 when idle and then jumps to 56. I just wasnt expection that big of a jump, is it normal

Hanabal, 55 C is *normal* for this processor. 42-43 when idle is a tad high, but that depends on the environment (ambient temp, case airflow, etc). The fan doesn't need to be faster, because it's doing fine as it is. The jump from 43 to 56 isn't that big a deal. The CPU can run at temperatures up to 70 or 80 degrees. If it really gets too hot, it has an automatic shutdown feature, which prevents damage to the chip; you can probably also set the bios to give you a warning in this case.
in short: stop worrying, your computer is fine. |
