New hard drive problem

I just bought a maxtor diamon max plus 9 120 gigabyte hard drive and tried to install onto an Asus P2B-F (440BX) motherboard.

It detected the model number fine, but when it goes to the screen where it enumerates all the supported features of the drive, the bootup halts.

I believe I have the latest asus BIOS for that motherboard. Is there something I am missing here?

It isn't a master slave issue either.

Since its brand new, I'll call Maxtor support. I'm not trying to be a smartass. They should be able to tell you in a heartbeat if it is an incompatibility or a bad drive.

I second Boner in his suggestion to call Maxtor.

Although I would check wether it isn't the cable first. Could be. Who knows.
Try unplugging it and plugging it back in and making especially sure it's plugged in correctly (no bent pins or anything), double-checking the master/slave settings, replacing the cable, etc.
If none of this yields any results (positive or negative, THEN I would buy Maxtor or Asus. This way you can avoid all those stupid questions by simply saying "Yes, I did that".
Anyway, good luck and let us know how it turned out, K?

Do you have another computer you could try it in. That could help narrow down what could be causing the problem.

I have yet to have any issues with Maxtor and I would never call Maxtor support since that is the only thing about Maxtor I hate. Check your jumper settings and do what Mattborn said if you can. Try using it in another machine and see what happens. I have the same drive as you but it only has 80gigs of space. I am able to use it in my very first system and its a frikin dinosaur. 400mhz celeron lol

Intel 440BX board? I'll bet the BIOS doesn't support much above 40 Gigs. I recently put a 80 Gig WD on my Abit BE6-II and had to partition it to 2 40 Gig partitions because the BIOS doesn't recognize above 40 gigs.

That's funny, I have (2) 120 gig maxtors on a Amd K6-266 (Acer) and they see all 120 gigs..

Do Maxtor drives still come with free controller cards? Always worked for me, and circumvented BIOS issues

I think they only ship controllers with the big drives now (> 128Gb).
