Lets Find Mondak a New LCD Monitor!!!
Where to begin? I guess Lasereth got me started on the 17inch path the other day when he told me to just save the $$$ and get a 17inch instead of a 19inch LCD. Originally when I decided that is what I would do with my Christmas winnings, I figured 19inch LCD.
I have done some research and maybe that is not the thing to do. I want to be able to game with this thing and what I have learned is that you have to be a little careful when picking an LCD monitor if you want to be able to play games on it. You will see ghosts and it will look crappy if you pick a bad one (despite price level). The other thing is that 1. Most 19 inch LCDs that I can afford are 1280x 1024 2. This is the same resolution as a decent 17inch which means a higher dot pitch 3. The response rates are slower in 19s that I can afford 4. Maybe I should look at a 17inch LCD instead and get a really good one With that in mind can anyone let me know what they think here? Let me know: 1. What to buy 2. Where credible reviews can be found 3. Where to buy 4. Anything else you think I should know I have amassed about $700 for this although if I am getting a 17, I may not need to spend that much and I can get some new car stereo speakers (I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the Infinity Gold Stereo System and all but one speaker are either blown or just completely not working...yuk) if I have money left over. I can also wait some if someone has some information about a great product that is comming and will be a good value. I don't need to buy this today if there is something MAJOR comming. Thanks a lot to all. Hope Christmas was killer.... Oh yeah one more thing. There was a killer review on Tomshardware.com that was very informative, but it only covered four models. while it was hugely in depth, I wish some others were reviewed. I mean sometimes the manufacturer has changed the model number some (Samsung 172x vs Samsung 173P) and I don't know if there are different guts or if the case is just different. All I can say is the advice I gave ya before: go for 20ms or less response time, and 17". You'll save the money, have a huge-ass LCD, and have the ability to play games on it. I have no experience with the brands and quality of each LCD manufacturer, so I guess the other TFP members that own LCDs can vouch!

The Dell Ultrasharp
I am sitting, staring into a dell ultrasharp display, and it is a nice site. Very easy on the eyes, bright, and fast enough to play games and not notice. Looks like they are going for about $500 at dell.com right now.
One word of warning: If you buy a flat panel, please don't stick with standard VGA cables. Most displays have a fairly cheap A/D converter in them, and you will end up with blurry areas many times on your screen. These blurry areas are not the display, they are just artifacts of going from digital to analog and back to digital. If you get any card with a DVI output and use it, the display will become clearer than any CRT you have ever seen. Oh, and check out http://www.fatwallet.com for any deals happening with the monitors. |

Thanks aoeuhtns. I plan on only looking at DVI monitors which help me eliminate a lot of them right off the bat.

Just wanted to let you know that sometimes it dont pay to get the DVI version, test the monitor first before you buy it, I noticed NO difference between my 192N (standard analog) and the 192T (DVI) Tried both and found that if anything the colors were better represented on the Analoge one, so I saved myself $100cdn by going with the 192N instead. Not that DVI isn't better, but if you had a choice between a better panal with only analog or a lower quality panal with DVI, I would go with the analoge one.
I do suggest you take a look at all of them yourself before buying one, slip into bestbuy or somewhere and just look at the different models, and try and pick one that best represents the one you are looking for. also www.tomshardware.com had a very good article on LCD displays if you wanted to check it out. |
