Windows 2000 Service Packs Update Advice
I recently had to get a new hard drive and reinstall Windows 2000. Now I need to go back to microsoft website and download all the updates and service packs. Does anyone have any advice or warnings about doing this? Thanks

Yup, MS office updates will not run without the CD to insert during the update process. make sure your nice and legal
Other than that, it as easy as can be. Just stay away from that media player 9 crap. Let windows update decide the download and install order. it willl do so automaticly unless you mess with the checked downloads. Hope you have broadband, Otherwise your talking several hours.

I also reccommend downloading things like the MSBlast patch and a firewall util before you install windows.
After you install windows, make sure your network cable is unplugged before you first boot up. Apply the blaster patch, and install a firewall (zonealarm is free). You can get rid of the firewall after you have all your udpates and whatnot installed, but it'll save you the headache of installing all the updates and everything, and finally installing a virus checker only to see that you got infected with a virus within minuites of booting up for the first time, unprotected. just a word of advice from someone who installs windows quite often for various reasons on various machines. |
