Whats the purpose of a proxy site? ...
Whats the purpose of a proxy site?...
I can see not wanting to leave a trail when you surf the net but porn sites dont work unless you have cookies enabled so what would a proxy site be used for? ... A site like this seems like it would filter out the things you would be trying to find..... I know a business would use it to regulate what employees are seeing, when they are supposed to be working... I meant It won't let you block your trail when surfing porn........ From an ISP's point of view, they use proxies to cache data. It helps the frequently downloaded data to be accessed quicker (since they can just give you the cached version on their proxy server) and save on bandwith.
From average person kind of view, people use it on LANs as a way of sharing internet over a network. Some people that are nervous being on the internet and see movies like the net and are afraid of the government seeing what they're doing, or having their credit card number or life stolen, or are doing illegal things use a remote proxy/proxys to hide their ip from the address they want to connect to. So like if I was to post on this forum thru a proxy, the forum would log the ip of the proxy I used, not my actual ip. |

Most of the time proxy sites are not useful at all. They can hide your IP so that you can post, email, or surf anonymously, but alot of times, the proxy sites themselves are there to gather information, not just hide yours. I have found at least three proxy sites that turn around and sell the "surfing habits" of the users who use them to marketing companies. As well, email addresses you enter can be taken and sold to SPAM lists. If you really want to clear your tracks, use software, but be warned. No matter how hard you try, there will always be a record of where you went when you're on the Internet. (Even if the information is never shared)
