Internet Tax Ban Set To End This Week
Push On In Senate For Permanent Change

WASHINGTON -- A five-year ban on Internet taxes expires at the end of the week and there's a push in the Senate to make it permanent.

But some lawmakers are questioning whether it can be justified.

Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander says he supports the ban to help the Internet in its infancy. But he says it now should compete just like any other industry. Some opponents are also concerned that state and local governments would be deprived of money they badly need.

Supporters of making the ban on Internet taxes permanent say there's nothing to indicate state and local government coffers have been hurt. They stress the importance of Internet use to economic growth.

The measure has already been approved by the House.

Hopefully, this passes in the Senate and is signed by Dubya -- the last thing the US needs is another tax!

I think the .com's would only be hurting a bit more if they lost the no tax advantage, so I hope it goes thoguh. But forever? that seems dumb...maybe another 5 years.

Sure, I like to get stuff cheap, but I don't see any reason that internet business should have this sort of advantage over bricks&mortar sites.

yea, they should extend the ban for at least a few more years. if the .com's have to pay taxes then you can look for some more companies to go down the tube.

I wonder how that's really supposed to work. What if your just selling something you make on your own website? Do you have to register your online store in order to sell things? Who do you register with? The government? Is the government in charge of the internet???

Taxes on the internet are BS because the whole world is local to it. How do you decide jurisdiction for taxes when your seller is in another state, or even another country? Should the state of the seller get the sales tax or the state of the buyer?
