USB 2.0 ports on ASUS A7V333 - why dont they work?
I have had an asus A7V333 for a year now. Actually I had two, one was RMA'd for a unrelated problem, but the USB 2.0 ports have never recognized anything I put in them on both boards. The problem is I have no USB 2.0 devices, but I understand they are backwards compatible and should recognize USB 1.1 devices.
Anyway, I haven't put too much effort in fixing it (because ASUS support is shitty) untill now, because my 1.1 ports and hub are full, and I want to use the other 4 ports I have that have never worked. Someone on another forum said they had the same problem and had to contact ASUS and have some drivers sent to him to fix it. I called ASUS support last night, and someone is supposed to call me back. Hasn't happened yet. The guy who took down my info and got my number so they could call back asked if I had the 2.0 drivers from microsoft, to which I said yes. A little research told me that 2.0 drivers are included in XP SP1, which is what i have. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and can offer any help or advice with the problem or dealing with ASUS suppport. Thanks |

That's the exact symptoms of the motherboard drivers needed updated. You need to find the Asus A7V333 chipset drivers and install them. If that doesn't work, then I have no idea. Those drivers are supposed to be found very easily (without having to call them!).
I'd look around here for the correct drivers. You may want to call them and ask which you need to download. I hope this is some help; good luck! -Lasereth

In theory, USB 1.1 and 2.0 are fully compatible. But that's the theory, of course...
What I don't understand is this: do your USB ports work at all? If not, perhaps they're turned off in the BIOS? (Hey, it happened to a friend of mine!) If the USB *should* work (according to the BIOS), but doesn't, then we can safely conclude that it's fucked up... Whether an USB driver will fix your problem is debatable. I've got an ASUS P4P800 (cool), and it needed USB 2 drivers (SP1); It had fully functional USB ports, but Windows simply didn't understand that they were actually USB 2. |

Yeah, definitely check and see if they're enabled in BIOS. I've had about 3 motherboards in the past year, and I've had to install the chipset drivers on all three just to get the USB ports working at all. It may not be like that with Asus, but it sure is with Abit, Gigabyte, and BioStar.

Thanks for the replies...
It is enabled in the BIOS, thats where i checked first. Also, Device Manager lists them as working fine Thanks for the link, Lasereth, I did check there a while ago, but i don't think I tried either the "VIA 4 in 1 Drivers 4.37V for Win 95/98/2K/ME/NT4.0" or the "PCI-USB2 (VIA controller), VIA USB 2.0 driver for Win98 and WinME" because niether one lists XP. I guess my best bet would be the VIA 4 in 1 drivers, right? |

Yep, my mobo actually uses the VIA chipset as well, and that's exactly what got it working. Good luck!

I would like to thank everyone for their help and suggestions, but unfortunately, they still don't work. I have all but given up on ASUS support, I call and they take my number but never call back. For that reason alone, this will probably be the last Asus product I buy.
Anyway, I installed the newest VIA 4in1 drivers off of ASUS website. I reinstalled the USB 2.0 drivers off of the Asus CD that came with my board. I checked the BIOS - under Advanced, "USB Legacy Support" is on Auto, under PCI config, "USB function" is enabled. In Device Manager, USB 2.0 is listed twice and both are working correctly. Still no response when I plug into any of the 4 USB 2.0 ports, the 2 on the board, and the two on the daughterboard with the game port. I am using a 128MB flash drive to test them. It has a LED activity light on it. When I plug it into a 1.1 port, I get the "device detected" sound, it lights up, blinks intermmitently, and goes out when activity stops. When I plug it into a 2.0 port, no sound, LED lights up steady, and then turns off. I will send yet another email to ASUS and see what happens, if anyone has any other ideas, I greatly appreciate them. |
