How do i find out what type of ram i have?
Simple question, i have an older stick of 128meg 200mhz DDR ram, and i was wondering if it would be compatable w/ my new computer, which is an Emachine(2400+) I know this computer has DDR ram, but, i dont know the specifics, does it matter?
any help would be great, TIA. |

The Athlon XP 2400+ you have is 266 MHz Front-Side-Bus. That means that the RAM you *need* to put in it is at least DDR PC2100. The PC1600 may work, but even if it does, it would bottleneck the CPU badly.
Generally, you want your RAM to be the same FSB speed as your CPU, and higher if you want. When the CPU's FSB is higher than the RAM's FSB, then the problems start. Most Barton's won't even work unless you have at least PC2700 RAM (333 MHz FSB). So, in a summary, I'd say that there's a possibility that it would work, but from a technical perspective, it shouldn't. I'd buy a stick of 256 MB of PC2100. You can get that cheap as Hell, and the FSB would match the CPU perfectly. -Lasereth
