ADSL Modem/Router Problem
I've got a Billion BIPAC 711 CE acting as the adsl modem/ router and I'd like to add a Linksys BEFSW4 v3 as a wireless access point/router. I'm having some trouble getting the linksys to see the internet connection. The Linksys is set to obtain an IP automatically in the internet config sheet and the Billion is set to use PPPoA. The modem itself has no problems connecting, nor does the computer when connected directly to it. Can anyone help? Am I missing some settings or something?
Thanks in advance |

I don't have any experience with the Billion device, however, you will trouble getting the wireless router to work behind the other router.
I had a similar problem and decided just to cough up the $10/mo. to Covad for 5 IPs. No more P.O.S. Zyxel DSL modem/router to interfere with my Linksys. Now I can experiment with Linux routers and other directly attached devices with static IPs. Anyway, try disabling the router feature on the access point. Another option is to use just a regular access point (no router), or configure the BIPAC as a bridged modem. That effectively disables the router component and passes the traffic through to the LAN. Your other router will then authenticate, etc. Don't know how to do that with your device (I couldn't get it to work on my Zyxel), but a Google search might provide some help. Good luck.

you can usually turn a router into a switch by just turning off the features dhcp nat etc , and using the ports on the back and not the 'lan' port
Though i've had trouble with this on my belkin piece of garbage wireless router that i am about to replace |

I've done the same as charliex suggests, I've got a SMC wireless router that I just added on to the rest of my already established lan behind a router'd DSL connection, and I wanted to just treat the wireless router as a switch, but for some reason the thing just didn't want to pass the DHCP requests between the wireless clients and the other clients on the main lan (over a crossover plugged into a standard port)... this could be because of the nature of the switch not broadcasting to everyone, but I don't know for sure... so I just set it up as it should be, the wan port connects to my lan and it hands out it's own ip addresses... Works great for surfing, but I can't access my shares on the main lan, nor can I access back to the wireless connected clients, even with the firewall disabled, of course I think this is because there is only the one ip address visible to the main lan and the router isn't going to send the smb packets to everyone on the wireless lan. So... needless to say, the wireless router is only being used for wireless, it's 4 lan ports will never be used... I shoulda just got a WAP, but I was bein' cheap... one day I will have money for it...

thanks for your replies, i've been messing about with it and the thing that made it work was to take the cable from the modem/ router and, instead of connecting it to the wan port on the linksys, connecting it to the lan port and it reads it as a lan connection! strange!
