Monitor Suggestions
 

My 19" monitor just died, a few "pops" and "snaps", and it went dark! So instead of suffering through this 14" monitor I am using NOW. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would really love an LCD monitor, but are they worth the extra $$$. I have 64mg video card...would I need to upgrade anything to get an LCD? Any suggestions would be apprecicated! What should I look for? What are the differences?

resolution would be something to look for. in my opinion, you need to look for at least three things, resolution, dot pitch (size of each dot that makes up the image, so basically the smaller the better as more can fit per square inch), and refresh rate.

resolution can be whaterver you feel is necessary, i would recommend a diagonal dot pitch of .25, and refresh is up to you.

as per your question of your video card with lcd, it doesn't matter.

I've had an LCD monitor but my newest comp is using a 19 in CRT. For gaming purposes CRTs tend to be superior - and they support higher resolutions as well which may or may not be important to you. Of course CRTS are cheaper as well...

As long as you have the space on your desktop, I personally would recommend a CRT if you play any games, especially first person shooters. Though new ones aren't as bad, LCDs still tend to blur with fast movement on the screen. I believe this also effects DVD viewing for instance as well. There are also flat tube CRTs for a bit more money, though they still cost less then LCD.

What type of monitor did you have that died on you? KDS?

19" Sony Trinitron, more expensive than most but a very nice monitor.

I have an LCD. I have been using LCD's as my primary display in one form or another for the past 3 years. Before that, Sony or Princeton Graphics CRT's.

I still have my old Princeton Graphics Ultra17+ (I think that's the model) that I use when I need really high quality in Photoshop or something, but for the most part my LCD works. I don't notice the ghosting for the most part. The only thing I don't like about LCD's is the fact you have to run them at a certain resolution or else it looks bad.

if you are into gaming, many peeps i know in the field of pcs and programming say that crt's are good, as for lcds, well you sacrifice gaming quality for space on your desk.

Now, if it is for everyday use well, lcd is the way to go if you are willing to spend, i'd recommend:

i personaly reccomend Nec LCDs. mine is great for my eyesight. less tiring on the orbs.

Yes, my old monitor was a KDS 19", it was absolutely great. It lasted over 5 yrs, and we rarely shut down the computer. We do LOTS of photography work, so photoshop is pretty important to us. Thanks for the info!
