don't get ripped off by cable modem ISPs
i was paying 45 dollars a month in so cal for att/comcast cable modem.
then 4 months ago they started charging me 10$ more a month because i refuse to get cable tv. so the other day SBC offered DSL for 29.99 a month for a year. ordinarily i don't like DSL, but saving 300$ a year is nothing to laugh at. Before i switched i decided to call comcast and give them a chance to give me a better deal, because i knew they would start callling a week after i canceled, but i would be locked into SBC for a year. After 10 minutes on hold Comcast said they would give me a rate of 19.99$ a month for 6 months. i was so angry i could spit. first at them for being an ISP mafia and then at myself for not calling earlier. Give them a call. |
Ah nothing like a bit of competition. Unfortunately where I am its NTL or nothing, so I have to pay lots for cable. £25 a month or $40 to you yanks.
|
Comcast is a total fucking monopoly scam. Thank god I have Cox Cable where I live. $30 a month and 2mbps speeds.
|
You have Cox, and you're paying that?!?
Where are you? In Rhode Island, for not having all three of their services, it'd cost me 50-60 bucks. Talk about a rip off, I can get DSL for about $35 from Verizon. |
I just got 3mb dowload/500k Upload service...Wide Open West RULEZ....
Not to mention they just gave me the cable modem, no charge... I get digital cable through them as well, and all this for EXACTLY the same amount I was paying for the EXACT same package with COMCAST.... Except the speed differences, of course... Ps-I hear that if you live in Denver, they offer a 10MB service...DAMN!! |

Here is Wide Open West's Official home Page They just started offering 3MB service in my area...it is not even on the website yet... ...and let me also add that I have used their support a few times and they are VERY knowledgeable and helpful...I haven't had to wait on the phone for support longer than about 3 mins... These guy just totally ROCK!! |
I hate Comcast. I get shitty service with them. For no reason, my Internet connection will be lost. Sometimes it just lags really bad for a few minutes, but that's enough for me to lose connection to an IRC server or a game server.
The only other alternative is Verizon DSL and I hear they aren't too good. |
At a garage sale I bought an old dish receiver for 10 bucks . Took it over to my cable company ( roadrunner ) and they gave me 3 months free for not hooking it up and staying with their service . I gladly gave them the 10 buck Sat receiver in exchange . Will try the SBC trick next ! Thanks ! ;)

anyway, my parents have cox cable for 40 bucks/month. and i have resnet for 20 bucks a month (5mb+ bandwidth) |
yeah 45 for the service not the modem. i bought the modem for 50$ about a year ago. i wasn't about to let them charge me 10$ a month to rent the modem.

It pains me to hear about all the bad Comcast experiences. I've had their internet for over 5 years now and it's been totally solid the whole time. I believe we pay about $60 for internet w/2 IP's and basic cable TV (which backs up our DirectTV). I could bring that price down if I bought my own modem and got a router but just haven't wanted to mess with it.

I switched from cable altogether to Directv for TV and SBC DSL for internet. I love it pay a bunch less. Plus now I don't get calls every other day telling me I am downloading too much.
