Linux Projects for Beginners
I am brand new to linux. I've got Red Hat on a machine at home. Now that I have it installed, what are some things I could do to get a good feel for it?
Or does anyone have any recommendations for books for beginners that I could pick up? I don't have any programming background, I am mostly a hardware tech. Thanks for any help.

Linux Administration Handbook. Nemeth, Evi, et. al.
There is also one exclusive to UNIX by the same folks. At the end of each chapter there are projects to do that apply the previous reading. I have found it extremely useful. Reading is pretty lighthearted and is pretty interesting as well. My $0.02 |

I'd say a good way to learn is to jump straight in - the way I taught myself UNIX was to set up my network configuration to use my BSD machine as a router/gateway/firewall. When the rest of my computers were suddenly cut off from the internet, due to a misconfiguration, I had a vested interest to learn how to fix it.
When I wanted to run a webserver, I didn't want to run it on my game box, so I had to figure out how to install and configure Apache on the BSD machine. When I wanted to set up a fileserver, I had to figure out how to set up an FTP server on BSD. Basically, like with anything you want to learn, invent a project for yourself and make sure you keep working at it.

Im still new to setting up linux, but thanks to friend I have apachie up and going hosting a site, and to be honest the man files for cmds are what I use. My beef with redhat is it doesnt let you do enougph on your own. Im running Debian now and I love it more and more each day. I still keep my windows box for games but other than that everything Else I do on my Debian box. Pragma is right nothing is better than jumping right in. I actually gave up my games for a few mths and used it as my desktop so that I was forced into learning basic cmds configurations. As far as projects, start of by doing simple things, like making dir, users, files, and then setting rights on those things. The internet is a playground of information, and linux forums all over will point you in the right direction if you take the time to post and read. And dont make the mistake I did and try to relate everything to windows as far as learning. Its a completly differnt OS, so approach it as such.
