XP won't see my new hard-drive!! Please help!
I have a new WD 120g hard drive that I tried formatting using the xp disc. But then unfortunately it went ahead and continued to install windows on the new drive.
Now, I can boot into either drive and choose which operating system I want. But under the original windows install, I cannot see this new drive, even under disk management. Booting into the new drive and the new op. sys, I can see all the drives and it's all working fine. How do I get the original windows to recognize this new drive??? I have the old drive set as master in the pin config, and the new drive is set to slave. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! |

Why did you format the new harddrive using the XP CD? I'd have said just plug it in, boot into Windows, and format it there.
I'd recommend booting up with a DOS or UNIX boot disk and completely wipe the new drive, then boot into Windows again.

Sure, download and burn any Linux or BSD distro to CD. Personally, I recommend for doing this the SuSE CDs that have the entire OS, already installed, on the CD so you can boot into Linux and then do work on your harddrives. I don't quite remember the name of it now, but you should be able to find it on their website.
Once you've got that up, you should be able to see both of your drives and format the appropriate one.

Try switching the second harddrive to a different position (ie: not Primary Slave). See if it shows up in Windows then.
Also: http://www.suse.com/us/private/downl...nux/index.html Download the "SuSE Linux for i386 Live-Eval" ISO and boot off it. From there, you should (hopefully) be able to see both drives.

Like Pragma said.. try hooking the 'new' hard drive up as Secondary Master and leave the old hard drive as Primary Master... Id put any CDROMs as slaves on either chain... If it still doesnt see it.... it sounds like your 'old' hard drive's windows is screwin up... so Id boot into the 'new' hard drive, back up any data you need off the 'old' drive and format and re-install windows on the 'old' drive

Does the second disk even appear in the Device Manager? If so, next call up Disk Management and see what that thinks is going on. If not, shut down, double-check your jumpers and position on the ribbon(slave in midde, master at end!), and try again.
Another consideration is the drive type may be set to 'none' in CMOS setup. You may need to change your settings there... |
