Top OS X Downloads

This (among the two other variations of it for different major OS's) was one of my favorite threads on TFP 3.

List your favorite suggestions for OS X downloads here and briefly explain why.

I really can't recommend any since I don't use it but go ahead! :)

Games!

I'll start with the things I know and love, games.

Kiki the nanobot: Kiki is an amazingly good game. It won the uDevgame contest (best overall), and I can see why.

next we have:

NetHack: If you don't have it, you don't have anything. Seriously, try it out.

And for number 3

Vendetta: If you like pretty graphics, and fun, this game is for you. It's good. Very good.

Next time I'll have some usefuller things to post ;)

BerndBrot 04-19-2003 06:59 AM

NetHack is one thing - Angband the other: If you're a Tolkien fan (Think LOTR) you'll like this :).

Go here: http://www.thangorodrim.net/ and -> Download -> OS X Version

Adium: Best AIM replacement ever

For Coders:
Cocoa Browser: sweet little utility that gives you easier access to the cocoa docs
BBedit: Like the tagline says "It dosen't suck"
Fink: Huge amounts of Unix/Linux software ported for easy install.

<a href="http://ranchero.com/netnewswire/">NetNewsWire</a> has totally changed the way I get news and read blogs on the internet. It's an RSS Web News Reader. Also avalible in a free lite version (NetNewsWire Lite) that isn't missing anything from the reading parts. Only the weblog editor and the notepad are really missing.

madsenj37 04-23-2003 01:27 AM

Firefox for web browsing (Good safari alt).
Mac Janitor for keeping it optimized.
Jaguar CD essentials and Missing Media Burner to replace toast.
Forty-two for making DIVX rips.
VLC for watching all types of video formats.
PDF Plugin for your browser - to replace acrobat reader.
Limewire for file sharing.
Clear Dock for making the dock cooler.

Firestarter FX is a very cool new CD burning program with features such as Overburning, and just like TFP its free to use and you may donate when possible.

It's all about the Pop-Pop, one of the most enjoyable games ever! It's like a head to head breakout game from Ambrosia Software. (http://www.ambrosiasw.com)

And I could not live without WindowShadeX (brings OS9-style window shading back to OS X). (http://www.unsanity.com/).

Finally, I love Watson. Even with the copy-cat features of newest version of Sherlock, Watson is still, hands-down, one of the most useful utilities ever. (http://www.karelia.com/watson/)

Give Aquasition a shot instead, it uses the Limewire core but it uses Cocoa instead of Java for the GUI.

Also, Tinkertool. - hack system settings and such. Font, AA, finder options, etc...

drawerfixer 08-07-2003 02:00 AM

Ack, been too long! Surely other cool freeware/shareware has come out!

Ones that I find essential are:
  • Synergy
    - iTunes remote in the menu bar, along with a cute 'MTV' style bar that shows the current track. Easily worth the 5 bucks.
  • Safari Menu
    - Puts all my Safari bookmarks in the menu bar. I found a different one that could also launch applications and files, but the interface sucked. :(
  • resexcellence hacks
    ------> Specifically:
--------------> *Safari Tab 2, Safari Tab Highlight & Safari Fire Progress from here
AND this ->http://www.resexcellence.com/bootima...mo_startup.gif as my boot image
  • LiteSwitchX
    - Basically cooler Alt-tabbing feature
  • MenuMeters
    - Shows a bunch of stats in the menu bar. I only use the processor usage one. I don't really use it, but it's fun to watch.
  • Tinkertool
    - Does a whole bunch of cools stuff with the preferences. Definately worth the d/l.
  • WindowshadeX
    - Allows windows to roll up, become transparent, or be minimized in an awesome way you can't believe until you see. Brings back a feature Apple shouldn't have cut. :|
  • Sophos Anti-Virus
    - I'm not very impressed with this program at all. Luckily, I got the free demo version first. I'm merely waiting for my real virus protection proggy to get in from eBay.
  • Acquisition
    - I love this P2P program. It has the number of Limewire, only it works.
  • Geneforge 2
    - I played the demo for both 1 and 2 of this game. I always get stuck, become frustrated, and quit out of anger. It's a great game though, if graphics don't matter to you.
  • Glider Pro
    - The author just distributed this game for free. I'm awful at it, but it was incredibly fun back in it's heyday, and it's just as fun now.
  • Periodic Table X
    - Heh. To tell the truth I haven't used this program once. I figured I'd need it for college though. I'm sure there is a better one out there that is freeware though, so I'll be searching for a new one soon.
  • ClearDock
    - It made my dock a neato lime green with a blue outline. You can't get cooler than that!

Phew, I think those are the only ones I use. For the record, all the red words are links to the product's page, and all were hand copy/pasted and all that. This post has taken almost twenty minutes. So ever if you hate Macs or these programs, click one so I don't feel like it was all a waste. :P

Hopefully there are other Mac fiends out there with just as fun apps. :) Don't be shy!

drawerfixer 08-07-2003 02:09 AM

Gah, I knew I'd forget one!

Http Mail
- Allows me to get my Hotmail email through the built in Mail application.

juanvaldes 08-07-2003 02:43 AM

mlMac KaZaa, eDonkey, Bit Torrent and more coming. Still very beta but works well.

madsenj37 08-07-2003 11:57 PM

Zip Tools is nice also. Granted zip will be built into 10.3, but for pre 10.3 it is nice to have.

Top Mac downloads?

Since there is a great Windows download thread going, I figured I'd start one for the Macheads out here.

For me it has to be

MenuMeters (monitors system vitals)
QuickSilver (keyboard file\app launcher)
OnyX (gives me system control)
Temperature Monitor (keeps an eye on my temps)

Twizted 10-13-2004 01:37 PM

Hmm... not a big Mac user base here, eh?

Alllrighty then... :p

SecretMethod70 10-13-2004 02:23 PM

There is, I suppose they are just happy with the base system? I dunno.

brandon11983 10-13-2004 06:40 PM

Some of my favorite tools are:

WeatherDock, gives weather info from weather.com in the dock
MP3Rage, good free ID3 tag editor, I don't use it much anymore as I use AAC now
SiteSucker, for downloading full pages of pics and stuff, like EZPics only better

A recap!

In a pathetic attempt to bring life to the topic, I'll give this post a bump.

Yesterday, I backed up my important files and reinstalled OS 10.3.7. I wanted to clear out all the accumulated crap. Now I'm trying to find good apps.
Here are ones I'm sticking with so far:

Firefox - Seriously, the best browser out there. It has some aspects I'd like to change, but still comes out better than Safari. The variety of extensions/themes make for an individualized browsing experience.

iTunes w/iPod - Orgasmic! I have 14 gigs of music, perfectly coordinated between the two. It was actually easy to set up iTunes without losing my old playlists! (Though I can't say the same for iPhoto. Grr.)

WeatherDock - Heh, I have to admit that I only got this program twenty minutes ago, after seeing brandon11983's post. I used to play around with WeatherPop, but it just brought frustration. This proggy looks like it will work perfectly and for free too!

LaunchBar - Fantastic proggy, enough to make me feel guilty for not paying the shareware fee. I find it alot faster and easier to use the keyboard rather than working with the GUI. (Yeah, I know, but you know what I mean.)

Synergy - This is one of the few shareware programs I've bought and actually used for several years. It basically adds aspects that iTunes doesn't have. It can place a set of buttons (next song, pause, etc) in the menu bar, allows hot keys with the same functions (if my hands are off the mouse), and can display a floating box with song name, album, etc. It used to eat up my processor, but it is good now after playing with settings.

gCount - Shows in the menu bar if I have email. Can also be used with Growl for the prettiest notices.

VLC - Phew. Finally, I can chuck WindowsMediaPlayer. I haven't used it much yet though, and am crossing my fingers that it can correctly handle most clips.

Macaroni - With this application, I'll set a new system uptime record. It allows you to schedule a time to run the UNIX cleaning commands, and repair disk permissions. I put my computer to sleep at night, so this allows me to keep everything in order without messing with cron commands.

Now for programs I like, but haven't utilized to their full extents:

Roxio Toast 6

Remote Desktop

RealPlayer - Ugh

Office X - If I didn't get it for free, I'd go with Open Office .

NetNewsWire Lite

MacTheRipper

GraphicConverter

Final Cut Express

clamXav

BBEdit Lite

Adobe Photoshop Elements 2

Acquisition

I bet you liked how that last part was in reverse alphabetical order. What about you? Found any new OS X applications? hints? tips? I've modified my boot image and panel.

That way you know that a conversation might be really slow, and the person is afk. Using iChat or Adium it is a guessing game to figure out who is actually online and who just has an AIM capable device. My vote still goes to Adium, but it'd be nice if they could fix that problem.

keyshawn 09-06-2005 09:42 AM

While searching for some software on my new iBooK, I found this thread and thanks for the suggestions !
Adium is a kick-ass IM client, better than gaim on linux, and trillian on win.

Here's a few other newer progs I've picked up and looking good so far.

[note: all are freeware, unless noted][Post p2p apps ? hmm..maybe a separate thread, i dunno]

airstumbler - to help 'find' any wireless connections to use :D

unrarX - extract RARs on your mac

I'll be adding more as I get more acclimated to my tiger..

BTW - Can anyone recommend a [free or otherwise] audio cd ripping app and listener besides iTunes !? I prefer my music to be OGG format...

regards,
keyshawn
