Windows SP1...or not?

Hi everyone!

I just had to reinstall Win XP and since I have heard so much bad stuff about SP1, I was wondering...should I install it, or wait until SP2? Or will there be an SP2?

Remember to give what you can to TFP, even if it is only words!

I'm running SP1 on about 5 machines at work. Haven't had any problems.

SP's are good things!

Of course, always wait a week or so to let other people be the guinea pigs, but once something has been out a while with no problems go for it.

SP2 should be out relatively soon though, I know SP4 for Win2K was recently released.

in fact I have heard that SP1 prodused lower performance in games. Now I know games are not the #1 thing on some peoples minds but if it slows them down then what else can it make slower. Anyway I wouldn't suggest getting it unless you actually like some of the new features. I downloaded it for my Server system, but my gaming system is running normal XP. Also my DV System isn't running SP1

Think about it, SP1 is an huge bug fix for most of the problems and fixes most vulnerability issues from people exploiting the code.

You take on more risks if you don't patch those issues. I'd take the hit for more stability to the integrity of the OS over not doing it.

SP1 does lower overall computer perforance, just a tad bit. wont be too noticeable unless your a hardcore benchmarking freak. its a better trade off for having a more stable OS and less vulnerability issues.

Honestly I don't think it affects gaming hardly at all.

I have not had any problems with SP1. However for Windows2000 Service Pack 4 fucked up my system. I reinstalled and put on SP3. I keep the security patches and the rest up-to-date but I will wait on SP4 for a few weeks. WinXP SP1 is fine though.

I side with juanvaldes on this one. Service Packs are basically giant roll-ups of all of the bugfixes, security patches, etc. for the previous serveral months or previous year. If you don't upgrade to the service pack, you'll have a system with a hell of a lot of holes.

Set up "Automatic Updates" to keep your system nice and secure. Buy AV Software and configure it to grab the weekly updates (I know McAfee releases the new DAT files every Wednesday morning).

Insecure systems lead to pissed off admins either at your workplace, your ISP, or your college campus. Do the internet a favor, grab the SP.

to say nothing of viruses like Code Red, Bugbear etc that send out so much traffic they bring the net to a grinding hault.

Hell I STILL get code red knocking on my apache door every 30 or so minutes trying to get in. And its' fucking two years old!!

So do yourself and everyone else a favor. And patch your system.

SP1 provides some significant sercurity updates, but is known to decrease preformance in some games.
Please people Patch and run firewall / virus scan

Well said! The benefits of SP1 outweigh the costs. Yes, some people see a decrease in performace, but if you have a decent setup (enough memory and CPU) you shouldn't be hit too bad.

Unless you're running that notorious pirated copy with a CD key that starts with FCKGW, then go ahead and install it.

The only problem I had with SP1 was Roxio Easy CD Creator 5. Even with their latest patch, I can't get Project Selector to work. But all of other applications work. Like CD copier, EZ CD Creator, etc.

I've had no problems with SP1 on any of my pcs. My kids and I (mostly my kids) are playing games on them all the time. If there's a performance hit, I haven't noticed it.
