What's the best gaming console?
I'm thinking a new console would be a lot of fun. My PS2 is about to give up the ghost and games are getting limited.
I've played with the Wii, it's entertaining, but the limitations are a draw back. I looked at it + a BD player. But for the same money I can get a PS3 and the BD player in the PS3 is rated very well. I'm looking for: Netflix compatibility as a minimum for on-line access, Blu-ray is a must, HD storage a plus, good games of course and expandability with Wii type activity packs would be great. I'm leaning toward the PS3, but am open to X-Box and whatever else I may be missing. Any comments or suggestions??.. ..

I was a no-reply view. My experience is limited to wii and xbox 360.
If Blu-ray is a must, then wii and xbox 360 is not going to work. All the systems you mention will work with Netflix. The xbox 360 has a hard drive storage option. I think you should get the PS3 based on your criteria right now. I watch movies via Netflix on my computer which look better than watching movies via xbox my old school television. Halo: Reach on xbox is way cool. Last edited by Nepenthes; 11-22-2010 at 09:19 AM.. |

We have a Wii and a PS3.
I love playing the Wii, but everyone else prefers the PS3. Because you can do the Netflix and play Blu-Rays on it, plus buy tons of cool games, I'd probably recommend the PS3. But then again, I'm a Microsoft hater.

From your requirements it's gonna be a PS3. You won't be disappointed.

I find that there are more than enough features on the PS3 to keep me happy for years!
1. Bluray player. 2. Can stream from your pc with PS3media server for free (HD content as well). 3. Great game selection 4. like everyone else, they have a motion gaming section with the move. 5. They don't break like the 360. (maybe not as much now but the RROD doesn't happen on the ps3s) 6. HD gaming. I like the wii but the graphics are horrible! 7. Play and charge controllers. You can play while your controllers are charging. You have to buy a kit for the xbox360. So yes, Ps3 for sure!

Go with the PS3. The 360 just has nothing going for it anymore. I used to be a huge supporter but the PS3 has passed it. You can't get Netflix on the xbox without a paid xbox live subscription.

Making Blu-ray a "must" seems to make the decision obvious (and this thread unnecessary). Do you know of any other console with Sony's Blu ray built in? No? Then it must be PS3.
Were it not for that, the 360 would take it all. I laugh at the idea that "The 360 just has nothing going for it anymore." but I won't raise fanboi hackles by stating the obvious. I'd rather have a 360 and spent $50 on a blu-ray player than buy the pee ess three just for its blu-ray support and mediocre exclusives.

Maybe a better description of what I'm looking for would help. Startling graphics. Great games. Console upgradability. Netflix would be a huge plus since I have a 65" HD and my 20" monitor just isn't cutting it. It would be nice if it could stream music and vids. Samsung makes a nice BD player that streams Netflix, so If I'm really giving up a lot with the PS3, I can go another route. Why is the 360 better than the PS3? .. ..

The 360 comes with Windows Media Center. If you have a Windows box, it's an awesome interface for streaming music, movies & photos from your pc. Plus there are tons of plug-ins available that expand its capabilities even more.
Yes, Xbox Live is a paid subscription, but it is leaps and bounds ahead of the free PS3 offering. Not only does it provide Netflix, but it also streams your online Zune content. If you're not a Windows user, then these things are meaningless, of course. But the money Xbox receives from Live subscribers is put to good use by offering a top-notch experience, both online and off. PS3 has Blu-Ray. Xbox will never have Blu-Ray. Gaming is great on both systems, obviously. You should probably look into the exclusive titles for each console and see which games you prefer. Oh, and console upgradability? What do you mean, exactly? They both receive updates automatically; the 360's process is decidedly less annoying & time-consuming. But as far as upgrades, I don't know what else you could be referring to. Hard drives? The 360 allows yo to unplug yours and insert a larger one, if you like. But that is very expensive.

Upgradability, software upgrades/updates. Seems like there's a 'hack' for everything these days. Nothing specific there, just the ability to do something different. Maybe plug in an external drive to use as a media center.
The 'dream', though I understand it to be a little out of reach just yet, would be: A single box that could surf the web, download and store audio and video, play awesome games , record from satellite, play BD and MP3 CD, network 4 or more computers and TV's. Do it fast, with an easy interface and look good on a 65" HD. Of course be able to remove/replace components when necessary would be good too. So far, it takes at least 3 boxes to do this.

I currently have a 1TB drive (FAT32 formatted) plugged into my 360, filled with movies, and it works fine. For high-def, I burn movies with a Blu-Ray burner and stream them from my pc using Windows Media Center on the 360.
For music & video downloads, it's hard to beat the Zune service, particularly when paired with software such as SoundTaxi or Aimersoft, which kicks the drm off your stuff. As for recording from satellite, all you need is a TV tuner/recorder card for your pc. Windows Media Center will interface with the card seamlessly, and the channel guide is more than adequate for scheduling and recording movies or series. As for browsing the web, Windows Media Center has a plug-in that enables that. As for networking, my 360 currently connects to 3 pcs and 1 laptop without any issues. Windows Media Center is not required for this, but the interface makes it a much more enjoyable process.

Thanks for all the replies. My awesome SO Lala pulled the trigger on a PS3-320g/Move. It's great.
